Today’s guest is Ali Namdari. He is the co-founder and product designer at MedPics. This is an app that allows healthcare professionals to share clinical cases and get advice from their peers. It is being used by over 30,000 users including doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and students in France.

MedPics was inspired by a doctor that Ali knew who worked in an emergency room. She would take pictures of interesting cases and share them with her peers. This resulted in a long and unruly email feed. They also experimented with creating a LinkedIn format for chat and photo sharing. Ali and his co-founder eventually created a simple Instagram-like version that evolved into MedPics.

Episode Highlights:

  • It took about 5 or 6 months after Ali and his co-founder partnered with a student to get the first iteration of their app created.
  • They now have a full-fledged branded app.
  • Design challenges they have faced included working and testing remotely.
  • Designing for medical users was also a design challenge.
  • Ali also used mock-up pictures of salamis and food in place of body parts.
  • They have received great feedback and the impact on medical students has been huge.
  • The app was designed to share interesting cases, but now people are using it as a quiz platform.
  • Being opened to design changes and making things fun is important. Sometimes an app will have a natural evolution.
  • To access features of the app, users have to have proof of being a medical professional.
  • The images also have to be anonymized, so patients can’t be identified.
  • There is also a community manager to make sure the app is used in a professional way.
  • The app is free, but the business model is to build private groups for hospitals.
  • They are currently focusing on France and French-speaking companies.
  • The also raised a funding round and they have another one coming up for their educational business model.
  • French-speaking doctors are encouraged to contact MedPics for collaboration information.
