You’ve heard me say this before: we pursue things because we believe we will feel better for having them. Today we’re deconstructing this truth, we’re unpacking our relationship with negative emotions, and learning how to sit with them. Needless to say, this episode might be a bit uncomfortable if you’re used to avoiding them! I explain that the root of all our pursuits is primal – we move towards pleasure and try to avoid pain. This avoidance can lead to unwanted behaviour like overspending and overeating, but the good news is that if we sit with difficult emotions long enough, they give us information about ourselves that we can leverage for better outcomes. I explain how to do this through the N.O.W acronym of Naming emotions, Opening up to them, and Witnessing our bodies inhabit them. I detail how to allow negative emotions to pass through us by observing them with compassion and non-judgement, and how to practice thought-swapping.
