In this episode of Metaversecast, I talk to Giang Nguyen, one of the founders behind Reneverse.io. Giang's story is interesting for two specific reasons: first, they are taking on one of the largest challenges and biggest dreams of future gaming; second, because they are gamers without game developer backgrounds who have done very well creating a web3 gaming focused startup.

Play-2-earn is hot topic in the web3 and metaverse space. The most common explanation of play-2-earn is that it's in-game activity that gives you a real world reward. This can be done through different mechanisms such as item trading, staking, or even just playing the game. The idea is that you're not just playing for fun, but also for an opportunity to earn money.

It's an interesting topic because some gamers are super exited about it while others passionately against it.

One of the key ideas about play-2-earn is that you own your gaming assets like skins, items etc. and can bring them with you in to other games.

This is a big contrast to the current closed gaming ecosystems where you're locked in to one game and all your progress and items are lost if you stop playing.

The big idea here is interoperability.

Probably one of the most important words for the future of gaming.

Giang Nguyen and his team at Reneverse.io have set out to create an engine that lets game developers incorporate interoperability into their games.

That's a pretty bold task.

That's what we discuss in this episode as well as how Giang Nguyen and his co-founder went from being room mates to business partners.
