#64: Todd Jones (he/him) found The Phoenix through an unlikely source: the Colorado Springs Drug Court. Like most, Todd had no idea what The Phoenix was at first. He also had little desire to be sober. He DID however want to stay out of jail. In recalling rock climbing at his first Phoenix event, Todd remembers realizing "wow, that's the first time I've had a win in a really long time." Now after 12 years of volunteering and working at Phoenix, he's the Regional Manager and gets to see recovery in action everyday, something he could never have fathomed in early sobriety.
Tune into the episode to hear more of our conversation with Todd, including:
- How before Phoenix, Todd had no reference point of what recovery looked like or that it could be joyous.
-Why he wears his 'sober' shirt loud and proud for others to see
- Feeling seen and valued, and wanting to maintain a lifestyle of connection & community
- The barrier of stigma
- Realizing that the first step to solving any of his issues was sobriety. The starting point of the journey, and from that point forward he could start to build relationships in a safe space
- Not trying to tackle all your problems at once. It's a journey that we're all worthy of
- When his recovery went from "I have to do this" to "I get to do this"
- Fatherhood being the greatest delight and challenge of his life. Working through thinking that he wasn't the right person to be a Dad and learning that he can show up just as he is.
