#65: This week we welcome Phoenix volunteer and person in recovery, Stewart Powell to the podcast. After 20 years of active addiction, Stewart knew he was in a desperate situation and done feeling isolated and ashamed. One night in April of 2022 he opened his computer and searched for treatment centers. The next morning, he decided he would follow through with this plan and he picked up the search and called his family. Now over a year later, Stewart is out of treatment, volunteering at The Phoenix, and ready to embark on the journey of a lifetime. This summer, Stewart will be backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail as a fundraiser for The Phoenix, to inspire those in recovery, and raise awareness of Phoenix programs. The journey begins at the US/Canadian border, trudges through the states of Washington, Oregon, California, and concludes at the US/Mexico border. Check out and support his fundraising page HERE!
In the episode we dive into:
- The experience of being 'functional' and putting on a show for others: how this led Stewart to not know where the character he played ended and the real him began
- Dropping the façade: how sobriety has been a journey of rediscovering himself and reconnecting with the things he loves
- The excitement about doing all the activities he values that weren't a possibility in active addiction
- How he tried to attack addiction from all sides, trying all the tools he could: therapy, recovery groups, Phoenix, and getting back to outdoor activities
- How in sobriety, he still has to deal with the hard feelings, but he can now take time to pause, observe, and try to understand and then act instead of reacting like he did while in active addiction.
