Mike DowdA Cop’s Life of Hypocrisy

Featured in the award winning Netflix documentary, The 75, the former NYC police officer, Mike Dowd, was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison. He was involved with police corruption, as well as stealing money and dealing drugs on the streets of Brooklyn, in the early 80’s. When he was released, he went on to public speaking in universities, and workplace establishments to talk about corruption, policing, deviance and more.

This is his revealing story and journey including how prison helped change him, and how he’s helping the world today.

Mike D:“I wanted to be a good cop.”“Every officer is on the edge of committing a crime every time he does something.”“As a cop, you kind of have to be a sociopath.”

Nora: Do you think you were properly trained how to shut down when you came home?
Mike D: I don’t think there’s any training for that…You begin to accept it as normal, you don’t look at things as being traumatic, it just becomes a part of your being.
