1 Corinthians 13:5 Three reasons why we shouldn’t keep score: 1. …because we don’t have all the facts. -James 1:19 “Our use of mobile phones and the internet… collapse boundaries between social groups and conversations and break down generational, educational, and social distinctions. We are all brought closer to each other in a way that disguises and is hostile to pronounced differences of competence, authority, and right to honour. Our media tend to flatten out our social spaces in an egalitarian way, falsely suggesting that all voices merit an equal part in the conversation. As conversations that would previously be clearly separated from each other start to eavesdrop upon, to intrude in, and to become entangled with each other, the results can be volatile.” -Alastair Roberts 2. …because it’s a mark of immaturity -1 Corinthians 3:1-4 3. …because it turns a road into a highway. If I could buy myself a conscience that wasn’t broken Mend every fence I drove my hard head through Re-lock all the doors I wish I never opened Unlearn the things I wish I never knew And it came out through the bottle It came out through my fists It came out way too early I wish it never did Push it down, it comes out sideways Push it down, it comes out sideways Bitter roads turn into highways Push it down it comes out sideways I have days where it’s just nose above water Keep it together while I fall apart I have moments when I act just like my father The only man that ever broke my heart And it comes out in my silence Sometimes unwanted tears Comes out disguised as anger but it’s really fear Push it down, it comes out sideways Push it down, it comes out sideways Bitter roads turn into highways Push it down, it comes out sideways “Sideways” by Travis Meadows -Hebrews 12:14-15 4. How keeping score affects our relationship: a. with others -leads to resentment b. with God -leads to entitlement c. with ourselves -leads to self-hatred 5. Make peace, don’t keep the peace.
