In this episode, which is a kind of tribute to my dear departed Dad, I recount some powerful lessons from the man who was a brilliant psychiatrist and my biggest champion. He taught me that if something feels off about the environment you’re in, it probably is—and it’s absolutely hella-not your fault. We dare to break into the uncomfortable truth that many workplaces are designed for a very specific demographic, leaving neurodivergent individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum, feeling excluded. I share three stories in which my Dad imparted to me more than my fair share of his wisdom, and I'm hoping you to can feel empowered. Illuminating the Shadow EP. 28: The art of OUTGROWING $#!t that no longer SERVES you When we know better, we do better. And as we grow more deeply in ourselves and more grounded in our truth, we find that some of the things, behaviors, people and tendencies that we used to accept, that we used to enjoy and that we used to readily embrace, some of the things we used to settle for… well we find that they no longer serve us. They no longer align with the person that we are growing into. And that’s okay. This is a natural part of the process of growth. Along with growth, comes a natural tendency to OUTGROW things, people and places. Change is NEARLY ALWAYS accompanied with some level of discomfort, some level of resistance. And this resistance, this discomfort IT’S A NORMAL PART of the process of change. Your body is constantly trying to level out, to maintain its own sense of homeostasis, and so sometimes when we do things differently, when we branch out and away from our normal patterns, it sends kind of like a shock, a false alarm through your nervous system. And that’s where this feeling of resistance come from. Shifting into something new, can sometimes feel like a threat to your nervous system, but in reality the only threat occurring is you challenging that baseline. Illuminating the Shadow EP. 19: RECLAIMING OURSELVES through Implementing Strong INTRINSIC BOUNDARIES In this episode, I hope to facilitate a safe space for you all here to really explore and re-examine how some of your beliefs on your internally-driven boundaries as we shine a gentle light of awareness upon some of our beliefs on our own personal & intrinsic boundaries and how these beliefs & these tendencies we hold, how they exhibit through our lives. We are going to speak about how our beliefs are reflected back to us through these intrinsic boundaries and are echoed back to us through our self-talk, through our inner dialogues and how ultimately these internal boundaries they help us to define & develop our sense of our self. Our internal-most boundaries, at a most basic level, reflect our values, they reflect what we choose to PRIORITIZE and they reflect what we hold true. When we honor our own internal boundaries, our own intrinsic boundaries, we have the capacity to break our old patterns of self-neglect, self-abandonment, and we can transition out of our victim-based internal narratives and we can step into our own personal power we can then re-write some of these narratives, as we see that they are no longer serving us. And so we’re going to explore these themes a bit deeper today, because BOUNDARIES literally hold the KEYS to your LIBERATION. Your boundaries keep you SAFE and STRONG in your CONVICTIONS. Boundaries allow you to FREELY and CONFIDENTLY speak your truth and to help you meet your personal needs while upholding your personal values. Boundaries allow you to PRIORITIZE yourself & your needs FIRST. But in those episodes, we spoke about the need for addressing boundaries in our social interactions, and in our relationship dynamics, we spoke about addressing boundaries with others. In today’s episode we will be building a bit upon some of that context, some of that foundation, and we will be discussing our own personal boundaries that we set with ourselves, as we shine a gentle light of awareness upon some of our experiences, tendencies and beliefs about the boundaries that we set and maintain with OURSELVES. These more intrinsically-motivated boundaries that we maintain with ourselves they reflect our own inherent NEEDS. These intrinsic or internally-driven boundaries are deeply rooted in our core beliefs & reflected in our core values. These internal boundaries reflect back to us in our self-talk, our internal narratives and they reflect back to us in our own perceptions of ourselves, in the ways that we view & understand ourselves. You know how people always say that change begins within? Well, they are right and this work in BOUNDARIES begins from within, as well. True and effective boundaries, originate from our own inherent needs & internal boundaries, radiating outwardly to our external and shared experiences. And so chances are, that if you struggle asserting and maintaining clear boundaries with others, you more than likely struggle asserting and maintaining clear boundaries with yourself. Illuminating the Shadow Podcast Episode #15: BOUNDARIES are Liberating AF! Let's put them into ACTION! What if I told you that buried deep within the discomfort of your emotional triggers lie the very keys to your healing? What if I told you that buried deep under the discomfort of your most painful frustrations, your most painful resentments lie the very keys to your freedom? What if I told you that buried deep below the painful exterior of your most hurtful experiences and your most painful memories lie the very patterns and wounds that need your attention and healing? And that when that feeling of emotional stirring goes off in your body, presenting as an emotional trigger, it is in internal alarm, and a call to action, and that emotional trigger is often leading you right to a BOUNDARY that was violated, challenged or that needs your attention and re-evaluation. Our unhealed wounds arise to the surface as emotional triggers, characterized by their sharp emotional response often reminiscent of a past trauma or repeating trauma or pattern or belief. These triggers serve as a prompt and a deep call to action. This is a call to acknowledge the wound, to examine and honor it and to offer that trauma wound the space it requires to heal. It’s time to honor our boundaries as we HONOR ourselves and explore our emotional triggers, as the vital messengers they are. And yes, they are vital messengers, they point us to what needs our attention and response. So today, we are going to continue our discussion on boundaries, as we dive in deep just shine a gentle light of awareness upon some of our patterns, habits, and beliefs surrounding boundaries and how we can maintain and assert clear and sustainable boundaries with others. Illuminating the Shadow: BOUNDARIES! Those aren't your bags, Baby! BOUNDARIES do not BIND, they LIBERATE So as you begin to reflect upon the relationships in your life… relationships with your family, relationships with your friends, your partner, co-workers… Do you feel HEARD? Do you feel VALUED? Do you feel safe? Do you feel like you can openly express your own needs? Do you feel safe expressing your boundaries? When you think about boundaries within your relationships… What comes up for you? As you begin to reflect upon the boundaries you see as examples in your life, in your relationships, perhaps you begin to question whether or not these cycles and beliefs about boundaries that once held you, that once kept you comfortable and safe in what you knew at the time, if you are beginning to see that these behaviors and beliefs aren’t serving you any longer, and you’re ready to release yourself from their holds, well it may be time to start to begin to think about your own personal journey in boundaries. Boundaries are the common ground and the very foundation of where our personal values & beliefs, our sense of self and our emotions meet. And they are also sometimes where they clash. What if I told you that people treat you EXACTLY how you allow them to treat you? What if I told you that we show people HOW to treat us and we show them the very BEHAVIORS that we find acceptable, and these behaviors and tendencies are directly reflected in the very BOUNDARIES (or lack of them) that we set forth? While boundaries may seem limiting or restrictive sometimes to others, when used appropriately they are QUITE the opposite and they are LIBERATING AF!! OUR BOUNDARIES KEEP US SAFE. But boundaries are much more than that, when we set boundaries, we then have the capacity to recognize and accept and to MEET our own needs. Boundaries are the courageous manner through which we act to nurture ourselves, through our confidence to SPEAK our TRUTH. When we set boundaries we have the courage to LOVE and honor ourselves and to meet our needs, and we can then act to reclaim our power and to re-write some of our outdated narratives, if we find that they are no longer serving us.
