Hello Wise Women! Today, I’m bringing you a special conversation I had with my friend Steve Heatherington. This conversation has stayed with me, touching on something I've been thinking about a lot lately—growing old with curiosity, dignity, and wonder. I don’t want the privilege of aging to be weighed down by shame or resignation. And that brings me to my guest today, Steve. Curiosity about how things work is a hallmark of Steve’s life and work. He helps people with something to say and find their voice by using it through learning to podcast. Starting as a student, he now teaches The Podcasting Workshop and is also a Production Partner helping podcasters with their problems and projects. He lives in a small valley in South Wales where he is an alpaca shepherd to a herd of over 30 alpacas. They continuously teach him new things about slowing down and staying curious. They are also the subject of his own podcast - Alpaca Tribe . Steve defies the narrative we’re often told to fade into the background as we get older. Instead, he practices curiosity like a muscle, learning new things every day. I think you’ll find his story just as inspiring as I did. 🎙️ Original Podcast Music by Nadine Kelly (drums and vocals) and Tim Buell; Produced by Tim Buell ☕️ Sponsored by Infusco Coffee Roasters.…

Welcome to a new year of Health Raisers! This year, we're starting with social health, exploring how contributing to our community enhances the well-being of all. For the first time, I'm bringing on a guest to address our role as stewards of the planet, and I couldn't think of a more fitting person for this essential topic than Tania Marien . Tania and I first connected as podcasters and coaches in the Podcast Fellowship led by Seth Godin and Alex DiPalma . Tania is a reporter at heart. Speaking with people, doing research, and celebrating others' good work makes her happy. She produces a podcast where she hosts conversations with freelance environmental professionals who have taken creative approaches to science communication, nature awareness, and public outreach. She also speaks with researchers whose work informs our understanding of how people learn about the environment outside of the classroom. Tania is currently exploring the viability of a new publication aimed at helping environmental educators and others transition into environmentally-minded roles in other sectors. Tania has had the opportunity to contribute to many community-focused events and projects over the years. Recent projects include The Carbon Almanac and The Carbon Almanac Podcast Network and the open-access book Storytelling to Accelerate Climate Solutions . She is also the host of the Talaterra podcast. 🎙️ Original Podcast Music by Nadine Kelly (drums and vocals) and Tim Buell; Produced by Tim Buell ☕️ Sponsored by Infusco Coffee Roasters.…
Hello, Health Raisers! I’m so glad to have you here as we wrap up this year together. In this episode, I want to share some actionable, meaningful takeaways from our incredible guests on the podcast. Think of this episode as a warm reminder to pause, reflect, and let what we’ve learned guide us. For each dimension of health—social, emotional, mental, physical, intellectual, and spiritual—we explore three small ways to turn these insights into steps forward, one day at a time. When we talk about Social Health , it’s all about how we show up for others and give ourselves permission to ask for help. In Emotional Health , we learned the value of feeling our feelings and giving ourselves grace. For Mental Health we learn to ground ourselves in ordinary moments—like pausing at a stoplight or listening to the sound of a coffee pour. Let’s not forget Physical Health , where listening to our bodies and adjusting with compassion can make all the difference, especially as we mature. With Intellectual Health , we find curiosity over comparison, encouraging ourselves to keep learning and growing. And finally, in Spiritual Health , we connect to something greater than ourselves, something that gives us hope. I’m so grateful for every guest, every conversation, and for each of you. Whether you’re here for a nudge, a moment of reflection, or a reminder that you’re never alone on this journey, thank you. I hope these takeaways bring you a sense of peace, purpose, and motivation. Here’s to embracing our health, one mindful step at a time. Thank you for being here, for raising your health with me this year, and for showing up for yourself in ways that truly matter. Here’s to another year of growth, community, and transformation. 🎙️ Original Podcast Music by Nadine Kelly (drums and vocals) and Tim Buell; Produced by Tim Buell ☕️ Sponsored by Infusco Coffee Roasters.…

Welcome to today’s episode, where we explore the transformative power of creativity and its profound connection to our well-being. Mary Lou Cook once said, “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” When I spoke with art therapist Kathleen Daly on the YOGI MD Podcast, she highlighted the therapeutic potential of the creative process itself—how it can provide a much-needed "brain break" and offer a means of relaxation, even for those who don't consider themselves artistic. As she put it, “I had used art from a very young age as a way to have fun, explore, process through things. And that was always a tool for me when I wasn't feeling well or needed to think through some stuff .” Art and music go hand in hand to support overall health and wellness. In another YOGI MD episode, music therapist Jeffrey Wolfe emphasized that music allows people to express emotions without words, offering a powerful outlet for feelings. In his work with dementia patients, he uses music to tap into memory and brain function, saying, “ Music is one of the last things that we lose... because of how connected all those synapses are in music within the brain. Music is stored deeply within our hippocampus... so we can use that to create new connections in the brain, with brain plasticity, to help repair parts that are damaged.” Studies show that engaging in creative activities can lead to greater happiness. And happiness leads to more creativity. This connection nourishes the mind, body, and soul. In today’s episode, I’m thrilled to welcome back professional Nashville drummer Tim Buell , my friend and drum teacher, to discuss the connection between creativity and well-being. Tim encouraged me to express myself in a new way by creating original music for this podcast, which opened doors to an exciting creative process. As Bruce Lee said, “The creative process is a process of surrender, not control." Join us as we explore how letting go and embracing creativity can transform us. In 2020, I read an article in my husband's boating magazine by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist and the author of "Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do." The piece described the incredible benefits of being on the water for one's health and well-being. Intrigued by the article, I reached out to Dr. Nichols for an interview on my podcast, and to my delight, he gracefully accepted. Our conversation took place over Zoom during the lockdown, leaving quite an impact on me. Dr. Nichols' profound warmth, humility, and dedication to caring for the planet's waterways not only emphasized the incredible connection between water and our well-being, but also personally enriched my understanding of it. Following our chat, Dr. Nichols remained generous with his time, always willing to lend his expertise whenever I reached out. So it was with a heavy heart that I learned that we lost this extraordinary human. This special episode is a tribute to the late Dr. Wallace J. Nichols and originally aired on The Yogi MD Podcast in July 2020 . His remarkable legacy continues to reverberate around the globe, and I feel truly grateful to have crossed paths with him. And now, here's our heartfelt conversation... Original Podcast Music by Nadine Kelly (drums and vocals) and Tim Buell; Produced by Tim Buell Sponsored by Infusco Coffee Roasters.…
Ladies, we are the CEOs of our loved ones’ healthcare. In this vital role, there is much information to navigate, decisions to make, and day-to-day caregiving to do. Unfortunately, our contributions often go unrecognized, and we may struggle with feeling overwhelmed, unsupported, and isolated. In this episode, Dr. Sadarangani shares practical tools and resources to empower yourself with the knowledge to provide optimal care for your loved ones while prioritizing your well-being. Join us in the movement to normalize asking for help and create a community-based approach to caregiving. Dr. Tina Sadarangani, a leading Ph.D.-prepared NYU professor and board-certified adult and geriatric nurse practitioner in New York, NY as a guest on your podcast, Health Raisers. Dr. Sadarangani’s expertise includes healthy aging, age-tech, cognitive health, long-term care, and sandwich-generation caregiving. Dr. Sadarangani is an NIH-funded scientist focused on aging, a clinician, and a tech-innovator; she is also a “sandwich generation” caregiver with aging parents and school-age children. She is passionate about helping families navigate the broken healthcare system – ensuring that everyone gets optimal, not usual, care. She believes that we all need to be more effective advocates for our health and the health of our families. She is a proponent of health equity and has published extensively in this area in peer-reviewed academic journals, including the American Journal of Public Health. She has been recognized as a Woman of Distinction/Rising Star in Long-Term Care. She attended Georgetown University, from which she graduated Summa Cum Laude, completed her Master’s at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed her doctoral and post-doctoral training at New York University, where she graduated in the highest bracket of academic preferment. Dr. Sadarangani’s experience taking care of her father inspired her to create an award-winning mobile application – CareMobiTM - out of her NYU lab that helps families, particularly those with dementia, communicate about the day-to-day care and keep track of their loved one’s health by engaging every member of the family care team to support better health. But Tina also knows that families don’t just need an app; they need support and information to be knowledgeable, empowered, and advocates for those they love. She has also created The Enlightened Caregiver - to give families the information they need to get optimal - not usual - care from their doctors. Tina now focuses on caregiving, nutrition, and fitness to support healthy aging, adult day programs, non-pharmacological approaches to managing Alzheimer’s Disease, chronic illness management, and long-term care.
