This week I had an illuminating conversation with fellow ADHDer and attention expert Jeff Copper about the uncomfortable feeling of boredom and how it impacts those with ADHD.

Jeff is back on the show to explain how boredom is linked to being physically uncomfortable and needing to seek stimulation, much like a tiger pacing in a cage. He cautions boredom can lead to negative behaviors if you don’t find healthy ways to engage your mind.

Jeff has ADHD and dyslexia and is an attention coach who helps entrepreneurs and individuals with ADHD and attention issues improve their personal and business results. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International ADHD Conference in 2022. He is the founder of Attention Talk Radio with over a million listens. He coaches ADHD individuals and entrepreneurs at DIG Coaching Practice, LLC.
Episode Highlights:

[02:01] - The different types of boredom and ADHD. How people handle agitated boredom.

[04:18] - Boredom leads to susceptibility to struggle with self-regulation.

[05:35] - Underwhelm and boredom links to self-medication with drinking, drugs, overeating, etc.

[06:25] - Sleep deprivation and how sleep hygiene doesn’t work for ADHD.

[08:00] - Using moderate interest to guide yourself to sleep.

[10:18] - Managing boredom example with family time using sudoku.

[11:33] - How me and my husband get to sleep at night.

[12:42] - Repetitive boring activities: laundry, exercise, dishes, watching a show, etc.

[14:44] - Boredom takes a great amount of cognitive energy and is physically uncomfortable.

[17:44] - Boredom during the pandemic increased.

[18:17] - 100% boredom avoidance reduces your tolerance, and nothing is interesting anymore.

[20:00] - How to get comfortable with boredom.
