Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.

As a physician, I see death related to cigarettes every day. With all the other health threats in the world, the risks of smoking often don’t make the front page. However, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Cigarette smoking causes almost half a million deaths in the US each year, more than motor vehicle accidents, firearms, alcohol, and illegal drug use combined.

Once people start smoking, it can be difficult to stop, in large part because of the addictive nature of nicotine.

Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brian Quigley. Brian is the CEO of Qnovia, a company with a unique approach to help people stop smoking. We discussed how difficult it is for people to stop smoking due to the physiologic dependence on nicotine coupled with behavioral addiction, such as having a cigarette with a cup of coffee. According to Brian, most people try and stop “cold turkey,” which is usually unsuccessful.

Please watch this 25-minute interview with Brian Quigley to learn more about a new strategy for smoking cessation.
