Many thanks to Yoshihiro Katsuura, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in San Francisco. Yoshi is also the author and illustrator of the new patient education book, "The Spine Encyclopedia: Everything You've Wanted to Know about Back and Neck Pain But Were Afraid to Ask."

Yoshi describes himself as a "reluctant surgeon." Before recommending a surgical procedure, Dr. Katsuura closely examines each patient's story, exam findings, and imaging to determine whether or not they will benefit from surgery.

To help educate his patients, Yoshi wrote a series of pamphlets about specific spine problems. Eventually, these turned into "The Spine Encyclopedia." A hefty tome, it's not meant to be read cover to cover but rather as a reference for patients who may suffer from neck or back pain and are considering a surgical solution.

During our 30-minute discussion, Yoshi also offered some invaluable advice on work/life balance and how to avoid burnout.
