Understanding my MRI results - DDD, Disc Bulges, Annular Tears and more?
Manage episode 321835030 series 2686696
Rob and Dave are sharing invaluable content today as they explain some common imaging findings and how they would discuss them with their own patients
Having someone explain your scan to you is really important because, as Rob and Dave explain any diagnosis is made from a combining of the information from your medical history, your physical examination alongside any imaging
There are normal age-related changes that happen to everyone and the skill of the clinician is working out which changes are normal and what may be contributing to or causing your pain, listen in and find out more
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- The diagnosis your clinician makes is based on a combination of your medical history, a physical examination and this is then combined with your imaging
- An MRI, X-ray or CT scan can’t see your pain, they are a snapshot of how you look at that point in time
- Back pain is very common without there being any changes on a scan
- Interventions can be about modulating and reducing the pain
- If your scan comes back as normal it doesn’t mean you don’t have pain
- It’s a win and a great starting block if your scan comes back as normal
- Normal age-related changes (NARC) happen to everyone and are expected over time
- If you’ve been told you have a degenerative disc disorder it doesn’t mean your pain will get worse
- Focusing on incidental findings can mean focusing on the wrong areas, and not achieving the proper outcome
- Changes happen to everyone with or without pain. It’s working out if the changes are relevant or irrelevant
- Disc bulges can occur without pain and often it’s the location that’s more important
- Disc bulges happen very slowly over time and the disc doesn’t have to go back in for the pain to go away
- A scan is just a snapshot in time to be used alongside other information to discover the likely cause of your pain
BEST MOMENTS
‘The job of a good clinician is to describe the changes and explain them to you’
‘A scan is another tool in the arsenal to finally land on the conclusion’
‘There are often words in reports that can make you think the worst when not understood in the right context’
