He offers sales training and coaching for creative professionals and shares this wisdom in his two books the Win Without Pitching Manifesto and his most recent work, Pricing Creativity . [00:00] This episode is brought to you by Latin & Code , your interim CMOs. [00:43] This interview is sponsored by The Agency Guy . If you’re not sure what to do with your marketing budget, you need this support. [01:35] Why Blair is a Creative Hustler in 60 seconds or less. [03:13] Blair’s wakeup call to change his mindset on pitches. [04:10] There’s a gulf between how Creatives sell, and how everyone else does. [04:41] Why designers and creatives are illogical. [05:30] Creative people take it personally, and they don’t build niche businesses. [06:10] A creative person’s need for variety is at odds with their businesses need for stability. [07:35] You focus so you can build deep expertise. [08:11] If you have the expertise, you have power in buy/sell interaction. [08:26] Gain power then leverage power. [09:16] Challenge the client's assumptions, and get them to hire a firm like yours. [09:34] What about the one-person shops who feel like they have to say YES? [10:08] There are two levels of success: Level one is Validation and level two is Freedom. [11:09] Saying no to almost everything. [13:15] What is Pricing Creativity all about? [14:54] What happened in the gap between books? [17:00] Pricing is not just math. It’s deep and broad. [17:30] Blair’s book is aimed at those who won’t read the boring pricing books. [19:35] What people are buying and why. [20:14] What Blair is looking forward to in 2019. [21:30] Leading by example in the Ad Agency space. [22:36] Ad Agency will say anything to get in the room and win the business. [23:46] Be kind but ruthlessly honest. [25:39] If you’re going to say no, explain the reason why. [26:24] You can fake some things early on in your business until you have it. [28:20] If you don’t set expectations, you get taken advantage of. [29:28] There are only two positions with the client, you can be a vendor or expert practitioner. [30:22] Vendors follow the client’s lead, but experts ask “what do we do next?” [30:51] The sale is the sample, you take the lead and ask the client to follow. [31:30] It’s better to not win the business as a vendor. [32:26] Blair would have any coffee with Elon Musk because no one is more of a hustler. [34:04] That’s a wrap, Creative Hustlers. [23:46] The internet should give value to our life, but not BE our whole life. [17:43] FlexPat is more affordable then many of its competitors. [19:38] Recent changes in product offering, and packages. [20:52] Arthur is not a fan of SEO, because it’s such a long term game. [22:30] He encourages past members to be a part of an alumni group, and encourages people to join up multiple times. [24:07] SEO - it’s a long-term game, but it’s still very valuable. [26:18] It’s important to understand SEO and keep building with what you’re already doing to continue to build brand equity. [28:50] For example, AirBnB didn’t start with SEO, but they grew and got into their lifestyle. [01:28] 60 seconds to find out more about Allen Gannett and why he’s a creative hustler. [02:17] Where did the quest to find about about creativity, and how people use it? [04:00] We sometimes mix together the technical skills with the actual talent of creativity which is ideas. [04:33] The story of Mozart is the best example of technical skills, not the idea of creativity. [06:00] Allen’s book. The Creative Curve , will be available June 12th, everywhere books are sold! [06:45] What is TrackMaven, and what is the value proposition for it? [07:22] The whole idea for TrackMaven is to stop making your Social Media Manager be a data scientist. [07:40] A Marketer’s outsourced Right Brain, taking 25 different channels to get your data. [08:04] It’s primarily social, but also content marketing, paid social, earned media, and web analytics. [08:33] TrackMaven gives the data to prove it works, but also gives recommendations to improve. [09:22] Allen uses this tool for his own marketing, and how it’s worked for him, and his business. [10:00] You can get amazing engagement on LinkedIn, and Allen found that trend earlier than competitors. [10:30] The cool kids are moving to LinkedIn. [11:00] Why Allen and TrackMaven is different from the competitors. [12:00] Allen’s intended clients for TrackMaven. [12:54] TrackMaven’s customer acquisition strategy, and they do all of the above to attract clients. [13:44] One marketing strategy that Allen is staying away from because it’s difficult. [15:03] What Twitter needs to do to improve from a marketing standpoint. [16:30] Bring the C-level executive to the forefront to promote transparency. [17:50] Allen is so excited for his book to release because he’s been working on it for the last few years. [19:25] What Allen does on the days where everything sucks and he doesn’t want to do it anymore. [20:00] Creatives surround themselves with other creatives. They look to the future, instead of the past. [22:55] Creativity is ageless, and you don’t have to start when you’re young. [23:40] We mistake initial difficulty as a lack of creativity or inability to be creative. [24:10] The most talented people are often the ones who practice the most. [25:05] Allen would grab a gin & tonic with Andy Warhol. [26:30] That’s a Wrap Creative Hustlers, find out where Allen lives on the internet. Check out and get a free trial at TheCreativeHustler.com/SEMRush [01:07] What’s up Creative Hustlers, today we’re talking to Wendy Kim! [01:12] What’s up Wendy! Tell us about yourself, and what makes YOU a Creative Hustler! [01:25] When Wendy thinks of a hustler, she thinks of a mom! [02:30] Wendy was in the corporate world for 15 years, but she couldn’t do it all. Taking care of family, yourself and a demanding job… so she had to get Creative! [03:50] Being a creative hustler isn’t working yourself to the bone, but how can you be more and do less? [04:48] People don’t always realize what Creative Hustler actually means! [05:29] How Wendy went from corporate life to helping mother’s realize their dreams. [06:25] Wendy couldn’t live like that anymore, so she tried to figure out what skill she had that could help people! [07:13] Wendy’s background was program management for Playstation, and she moved into an entrepreneur focused on finances first. [07:52] You need to be clear on what your WHY is. [08:21] Just because you’re a mom, doesn’t mean you can’t be a successful entrepreneur. [09:10] Wendy kept getting moms asking her how she built her business, and she stepping into coaching them, and that’s her now focus! [09:39] What Wendy does for Moms! [10:30] Wendy helps moms with a timeline, a plan, and accountability to succeed. [11:24] Having accountability as a Creative Hustler is so important. [11:40] When you start a new traditional job, you usually get a buddy or a mentor. Whereas, when you start your business, you have a desk and YouTube. [13:28] It takes a community to be an entrepreneur. [14:00] You need an ECOsystem, not an EGOsystem as an entrepreneur. [15:00] How to lose your ego when you’re an entrepreneur. [15:50] Wendy followed the formula, checked all the boxes to get success, so she thought it would be easy to transition into entrepreneur life, but she was wrong! [17:20] Entrepreneurs need a team they can outsource to! [18:40] You don’t need to hide behind technology! You can tell people you have a business right away! [19:27] With her Facebook group, Wendy wants to empower moms both in their business and in their life! [22:29] Building a community in your Facebook groups, and run it like a Mastermind. [23:33] Mindset is Wendy’s biggest challenge for entrepreneur life. [25:10] If you do the right things for yourself and other people, you will feel better and be the type of person people want to be around. [26:40] People wear their work hours as a badge of honor in society today, and it’s wrong. [27:23] Wendy is all about being PRESENT for your clients. [28:28] Having headspace allows you to come back with a refreshed mind. [29:00] Wendy takes more vacations & more time with her family now. [29:30] It comes down to ego and self-worth. People need validation by being busy. [30:00] You’re never going to get enough external validation, you need internal! [31:45] When you leave America, you realize there’s another way to live! [33:20] This year, Wendy is not eating lunch while working. [33:55] ImpactHub Siracusa made lunch for everyone to have a break. [35:00] Traveling gives you empathy, and you need empathy to be an entrepreneur. [36:50] Doing what you’re passionate about philanthropically is amazing. [37:15] There’s more to life than just working! [38:00] Wendy would have a kombucha with Oprah in the Promised Land, because she inspires her. [40:34] Where Wendy lives on the internet! [40:50] Wendy has a free worksheet to find your passion ! [41:28] Don’t forget to check out The Creative Hustler on Facebook , Twitter , and please leave a review on iTunes and Stitcher ! [15:12] You don’t need to be captive with a podcast, like you do with video. [15:45] Corey has been an audio podcaster from the beginning, and you can put on a podcast and it’s easier then viewing something. [17:00] Corey is getting into video this year, but podcasting is the method for delivering content. [17:50] Starting a lot of little fires, because some naturally extinguish themselves, but others blow up! [19:30] Podcast is a great way to build relationships and build business. [20:40] Inviting someone on your podcast is a great way to start a conversation with someone. [22:45] It’s not hard to sell a podcast, and if you’re a relational person, you can definitely do it. [23:36] Corey’s biggest challenge with podcasts, scheduling. [26:40] Corey has always been recording his podcasts at 8pm, but then he got more flexible with the different days and times. [27:50] Podcasting is so hot, it’s got to become its own business. [28:57] Corey will do testers for new podcasts, but he’s been getting paid from the word Go! [29:46] Forgetting to turn off mute is the running joke on The AV Life. [30:11] Corey could not pick one Creative Hustler because there are SO many people out there in the AV world that are amazing. He’d just meet with all the people, but Steven is his favorite! [31:47] AV has moved from just tech into a creative realm. [32:55] AV is about involving all the senses, it’s an experience. [33:40] Consumers are getting smarter, and they are expecting that experience so, you gotta give it to them. [34:10] That’s a Wrap, Creative Hustlers! [34:25] Where Corey lives on the internet! Today from Las Vegas, Steven, Melissa, and Alan recap Tuesday’s interview with Mira Zaki. Mira is a Seattle born, Manhattan-based photographer on a mission to empower women through transformative photoshoots. [00:30] What’s up Creative Hustlers! [00:50] Mira Zaki’s episode released Tuesday. [01:17] She’s a photographer who approaches her work with intuition. [01:30] Intuition and empathy are involved in everything. [02:30] Intuition trumps data. [03:20] We all numbers, but it’s not human to just use data. [04:00] Data is like the lumber, and intuition is like the Architect. [05:00] a Brand is all about the intuition. [05:50] When we’re able to combine data, with intuition, there’s a recipe for something special. [06:10] There’s an emphasis on data, and you can be hurting your brand. [07:03] Mira is overstimulated, so she doesn’t have lack of inspiration. [07:55] Mira is an empath. She did say that. [08:22] Empaths can sense people’s feelings even if they don’t say it. [08:50] Empaths can get inspiration from what they are saying, and what they are NOT saying. [09:45] Empathy can be subtle, or it can be reading their body language or facial expressions. [10:30] Mira makes a living off a business run on emotions and empathy. [11:07] A lot of people suppress their own intuition, they don’t trust their gut. [11:40] If someone is going to photograph me, I’d want them to bring out the best or the unseen in me. [12:20] Being about to sense how her clients feel is Mira’s value proposition. [13:20] Mira listens to Pearl Jam to help her mood. [13:55] Melissa and Alan worked close to a family member of Eddie Vedder. [14:45] Mira would grab whiskey with Salvador Dali. [16:00] Salvador Dali had 10 names. [16:30] Mira and Dali would probably have a fantastic night because they are so similar. [17:05] Mira’s traveling has given her time and space. [18:00] It gives you the space to dream big and grow. [19:00] Steven & Melissa will be traveling for another 6 months. [20:02] That’s a Wrap, Creative Hustlers! [20:18] Leave us a review! Peace Out! [00:57] Mira is in Southern CA right now. [01:38] A little bit about Mira and what makes her a Creative Hustler! [02:40] The idea of healing through photography. [03:00] Mira is an empath and intuitive, and it comes into her photography. [04:25] We make our decisions based on visuals, so let’s make it a positive photo. [05:29] How Mira connected Photography and her empath/intuitive skills to heal through a lens! [05:58] Do clients come for the photography, or the healing? [06:55] Mira’s photoshoots are full service and a party! [08:19] Mira’s inspiration to keep going: There are SO many stories to tell. [09:20] Mira is starting a project on Puerto Rico, a photo-essay to share their struggling. [09:54] Steven & Melissa adopted 3 Puerto Ricans to help them with the hurricane. [10:26] What do you do on the days where you DON’T have the inspiration? [10:55] Mira is overstimulated, so she rarely feels no inspiration, but if she needs it, she puts on Pearl Jam, and gives herself permission to not create every moment. [12:25] Lack of inspiration is a moment for you to recalibrate, and step back. [13:20] TRUST THE PROCESS! [13:53] Mira is excited about her 3 book series, and she’s proposing a photo and travel book about Seattle, and she’s photographing a WWE Cookbook! [15:02] Steven is really excited about the WWE Cookbook. [15:55] Mira’s struggle is powering down, and taking care of herself. [16:30] Entrepreneur burnout is real. It’s about the bounce-back! [17:14] Mira’s piece of advice for fellow Hustlers -- Sleep! [17:58] Mira has a deep spiritual connection with Paris, but it’s tied with New York City for her favorite place she’s been. [19:00] New York is full of possibilities and diversity. [20:00] Mira would meet Salvador Dali for a glass of whiskey. [20:50] The idea of intuition, and how it impacts Mira’s photography style in different cities. [22:22] Because everything is a possibility, Mira gets overwhelmed with ideas, but it is never too much for her. [23:11] How travel and experiencing other cultures impacted Mira. Her first trip was to Egypt as a child, and it gives her gratitude and awareness, and travel gives you the space to enjoy something. [24:30] Travel gives you the ability to focus. [24:41] That’s a wrap, Creative Hustlers. [24:48] Where Mira lives on the internet. [25:39] You can check us out on TheCreativeHustler.com and LatinandCode.com , and please leave a review! What’s up Creative Hustlers! Today, Steve, Melissa & Alan recap Tuesday’s interview with Brian Lischer, CEO & Founder of Ignyte Branding. [00:32] What’s up Creative Hustlers! [00:52] Steven & Melissa have talked to Alan in SO many different places. [01:34] Today we’re recapping Brian Lischer, from Ignyte Branding. [02:00] We actually interviewed Brian back in September at the live event. [02:30] The interview dived into Brian’s process in creating brands, and so much more. [03:15] Brian has over 10 years in the agency life. [03:30] Steven makes bromances over branding. [04:30] What makes Brian’s agency different is the convergence of sociology, psychology and mythology. [05:16] There is no much psychology in Marketing. [05:30] Alan uses psychology to help understand people’s marketing strategy. [05:48] Steven finished his first class teaching at Drexel recently. [06:16] People can spend $30,000 on a website & brand, but have no brand vision. WTF? [07:45] If you don’t know what YOU do differently, it’s the blind leading the blind. [08:15] Mythology comes into play with brand archetypes and brand story. [09:07] You have 15 years of mistakes to get you the results you’re looking for. [10:00] Mythology is like leaving your mark, it’s a legacy. [10:49] Mythology is to explain the unexplainable. [12:23] Hiring & acquiring talent in your growing business. [12:53] Brian had an outside HR firm to help with the hiring process. [13:43] What do you look at while hiring employees & contractors? [14:26] You can teach someone a hard skill, but you can’t teach being a part of the culture. [15:50] Alan actually hired Melissa, because she had a drive to learn. [17:50] You can go a lot further with a group of smart, hardworking people. [19:00] Bringing in an HR consultant to help grow is different then bringing one in to figure out what the hell is going on! [20:00] Alan’s hiring process with Ignite and their growth. [20:50] Hiring can be a lot of luck of the draw. [21:40] Hire the right TYPES of people, instead of the right skills. [23:10] Sometimes you can just tell when it’s not the right person. [23:39] Hustle beats talent, when talent doesn’t hustle. [24:08] Show up every day, and make progress! [24:30] Don’t get to visit The Creative Hustler online, and join our Facebook group ! [24:53] Brian is at IgnyteBrands.com ! [25:16] Melissa’s Moment of Hustle Contact: www.ignytebrands.com Twitter.com/BrianLischer…
What’s Up, Creative Hustlers! Today Steven, from Impact Hub Siracusa Sicily, is talking with Brian Lisher, CEO and Chief Brand Strategist with Ignyte, a badass branding firm out of San Diego, CA. [01:04] What’s up Brian, ready to get hustling? [01:19] Why Brian is a Creative Hustler, and more about Ignyte. [02:25] How Brian manages converging sociology and psychology into Ignyte. [04:37] Brian wanted to fix the brand, instead of promoting the brand. [05:40] Even Alan has a psychology degree. The greatest marketers are psychologists. [07:00] Started with a social media consulting contract, and moved into branding. [08:00] Ignyte has been open for 4 years, but really 3 full years. [9:30] How Steven defines brand. [11:00] How Brian defines brand. [11:35] How Brian brings data into shaping perceptions. [13:15] It’s important to know how a CEO views you vs. a Marketing Manager. [15:15] Why there isn’t always a direct ROI. [16:40] Sometimes you have to adjust pricing to meet the competition. [17:00] It’s more expensive and harder to be a change agent. [18:45] If it comes down to arguing about price, it is probably the wrong client. [20:26] Sometimes your competitors are 10x the price, but not 10x the value. [21:46] Where does inspiration come from? [23:14] Without having partners or high level staff, much of the work falls on Brian. [24:40] How Brian deals with late night resurgence in creativity. [25:24] Being able to do the analysis and turning it into data for creative execution is what Brian loves. [26:40] What Brian is excited about for 2018: Growth, public speaking and more. [29:30] Brian’s secret to balancing the building of a business is working with an HR consultant, and developing a hiring process. [30:48] Process is everything. [31:32] Brian’s choice for grabbing a drink with a Creative Hustler: Steve Jobs. [33:35] People not be able to tell detail and obsession that went into a project, but they can feel it. [36:07] Brian is a minimalist, and needs to work with others like him. [38:19] There’s two types of people who do pitches. 10 slides & no words, or 300 slides and tons of words. [39:15] Where Brian & Ignyte live on the internet. [40:55] As always, check out The Creative Hustler, or Latin & Code, and please leave a review. [41:13] Melissa’s Moment of Hustle.
