In this episode of The Functional Medicine Radio Show, Dr. Carri’s special guest Dr. Michele Summers Colon talks about Ayurvedic Medicine, meditation, and healthy sleep.

Dr. Michele Summers Colon is the author of “Body Wisdom: 10 Weeks to Transformation So You Can Get and Feel Healthy Again”. She is a holistic podiatrist, entrepreneur, yoga instructor, and a motivational speaker offering workshops and online courses based on her book. She hopes to inspire women to live happier, healthier lives that honor their own bodies, wants, and desires.

Main Questions Asked:

  • What is ayurvedic medicine?
  • How did you get into ayurvedic medicine?
  • Can you give advice that will help us build better, healthy habits?
  • How can we be sure the supplements we buy online are legitimate?
  • How can new routines make a difference?
  • How should we begin meditating?

Key Points Made by Dr. Michele Summers Colon:

  • Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient Indian tradition of medicine.
  • There are three main body types called Doshas and their names are Vata, Pitta, Kapha.
  • Each Dosha has a different ideal diet.
  • Your Dosha is determined by your body’s shape and the way you tend to think and perceive the world.
  • You are typically a mix of two Doshas.
  • Imbalances in the Doshas can lead to illness and health problems.
  • Don’t set the bar too high, too soon. Start with small habits that lead to bad behaviours.
  • Don’t set yourself up for failure.
  • Small steps can lead to accomplishing big goals in your life.
  • Use accountability. You are far more likely to fail on your own than you are with a coach or accountability partner.
  • Start with your morning routine and stick with it. One you have your morning routine hammered down, move on to other routines throughout your day.
  • Listen to a guided meditation or download an app for your phone that can help you get started.
  • Work meditation into your daily routine by starting small at the same time each day.
  • Meditating at the same time each day can help you become consistent.
  • Instead of “meditating”, focus on your breathing. Count your breaths, pay attention to how it feels, you will find yourself in the mindset automatically.
  • Focusing on sensations rather than thoughts is a good way to meditate.
  • Getting enough sleep is vital to optimal performance. Having an evening routine can help you get a better, deeper sleep. Eight hours is the ideal amount for the human body.
  • Eat your food a few hours before you fall asleep. Having food in your stomach can reduce your body’s ability to recover and repair during sleep.
  • Turn off your electronics an hour before you go to sleep.
  • The last hour before sleep should be focused on connecting with your loved ones and relaxing. Avoid stimulants like caffeine or showers.
  • Your morning routine shouldn’t be rushed. You should try to build a positive outlook on the coming day.
  • Drink water and stay hydrated, especially in the morning.
  • Try to stick to your body’s natural rhythm and internal clock.
