Prioritizing Your Spouse: A Lesson in Reading and Responding to Subtle Cues

The Generous Husband

I watched an interesting couple interaction at church today. The husband had taken their kids down to Sunday School after worship. When he came back, he sat one chair away from his wife. He silently explained this to her by pointing to the AC vent in front of the chair he took. She didn’t do much, but a micro-expression showed she was not impressed he’s put his comfort over sitting with her. So he moved over next to her, and she gave a small smile.

You could read this interaction many ways. You could claim she should have moved, or that she was being manipulative. What I saw was a man who read the situation well, and choose to put his wife first. And I suspect she felt the same way.

Sometimes the wisest and most loving thing to do is to accept the reality in our wife’s mind, and act on it.
