Movies with ghosts can be found in many genres including romance, comedy, horror, teen/young adult, and drama. Representations of spirits without bodies can sometimes offer friendship via Casper the Friendly Ghost, Beetlejuice, or Ghost Dad, or at other times serve the story as a harbinger of doom like Hamlet’s father, Jacob Marley, Freddy Krueger, and Harry Potter’s Moaning Myrtle, not to mention the more traditional spooky spirits that go bump in the night in scary movies like James Wan’s Insidious.

In the wake of huge fan reaction to 1984 original Ghostbusters, ghost hunting became a hobby for many. Interested parties formed ghost hunting societies to explore reportedly haunted places. Real life ghost hunting is now a subgenre of its own that lives on TV has been featured in series’ such as Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters.

In feature length ghost stories, the 1990s saw a resurgence of classic “gothic” ghosts, whose dangers were more psychological than physical, movies like The Sixth Sense and 2001’s The Others.

The found footage subgenre, originating with The Blair Witch Project, is fertile ghost territory, eschewing big visuals for a heightened sound design and handheld camera work which made the viewer feel as if they were experiencing the events of the film firsthand.
