Welcome back to another episode of The Motherhood Kit where today Yamel is diving into the hot topic of safeguarding your children from common summer illnesses. As the warmer weather approaches, it’s essential that we as mothers are armed with knowledge and strategies to keep our little ones healthy and happy.

Today, Yamel is joined by Jennifer Boyd, Founder of House Call For Kids, a concierge paediatric urgent care service that specialises in house calls and telemedicine, offering a distinctive healthcare experience. Together, they discuss how to avoid everything from sunburn, insect bites, swimmer’s ear and more, as well as sharing their tips for the essentials you need in your summer medicine cabinet.

In this episode, Yamel and Jennifer discuss:

  • The reason summer can bring with it a whole host of different illnesses including diarrhoea-type illnesses, stomach bugs, hand, food and mouth and impetigo.

  • The importance of hydration when it comes to keeping your children healthy this summer, and tips for what dehydration signs you should be looking for in your children, including chapped lips or dry mouths, not using the restroom as much as normal, or crying without tears.

  • How to avoid swimmer’s ear, including using ear drops that contain a little hydrogen peroxide to help dry out the canal of fluid after swimming, or ear plugs if the problem persists.

  • Precautions to keep your children healthy when they’re going to summer camps and will be mixing with lots of new people, such as educating them about increased hand washing (with soap if possible), reapplying their own sunscreen throughout the day, and taking off their shoes when they get home.
