Have you ever asked yourself, was I truly meant to be a nurse? I think the majority of nurses have gone through this.... feeling like we might have made a mistake! Did we struggle through nursing school, working so hard, only to realize that the dream we had once aspired for is actually not what we want to do. In fact, it might feel like the exact opposite.
I remember feeling like I had made the wrong choice for my career during my first year as a nurse. I had good days and bad days... and on the bad days, it truly felt like a nightmare. How can we tell if these feelings are merely the regular ups and downs of any job? Or could they be a sign that we weren't really meant for it?
Sometimes, it's difficult to answer those questions. In today's episode, we are talking about 5 signs you shouldn't be a nurse. If you're thinking about going to nursing school, or you're considering abandoning the career you've already worked so hard for, pay close attention! I hope this list, helps bring some clarity.
You should NOT be a nurse, if...
- You are inflexible
- You are extremely introverted
- You aren't gifted in both science and service
- You want to focus on treating the disease vs. the patient
- You are doing it for the wrong reasons:
- Money
- Respect/Status
- Quick employment path
- Job security
- Social pressure, etc...
Nursing truly isn't for everyone.
The most important factor in your decision to become a nurse is: YOUR WHY.
Helpful questions to ask yourself:
Does this profession fill me up?
Do I see myself progressing and growing in my field?
What comes easy to me that is typically difficult for others?
Am I gifted to do what I do at work?
What has this career taught me about myself?
Am I honestly ready and willing to abandon my profession for something else?
The most important thing to remember is this:
Nursing is not your identity. Nursing is something you do.
If you've found clarity about the purpose of your life and it lies outside of this current profession... IT'S OKAY to walk away from it all. At the end of the day, that's what nursing is all about. With a loving and holistic approach, helping each other live the very best life possible.
Be a positive force within healthcare and society.
