"Real Nurses" Series: 3 of 5
What makes a nurse stand out from the rest? How can one differentiate a nurse from a NURSE? I put together a list of values /characteristics that explains the difference, based on my personal opinion. When I think of the very best nurses out there - the ones I believe should be trusted, they have these characteristics and values!
To keep it short, I boiled it down to 5 things that mark an exceptional nurse:
REAL NURSES…

  • RESPECT THE PROFESSION
  • PUT IN THE WORK
  • STAY HUMBLE (this episode)
  • PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH
  • LOVE LIFE & PEOPLE

I've separated each characteristic into it's own separate episode. In this podcast we are discussing the effects of humility on nursing practice: "STAY HUMBLE."
We assume that humility is an automatic attribute of every nurse. But that shouldn't be assumed - in fact, some of us would be offended by some of the words within the very definition of humility.

Humility... Marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful. Showing deferential or submissive respect.

I'd like to suggest that there is a specific reason why humility is foundational in nursing. It greatly affects our practice in 3 major ways.
Before I go into that, I want to uncover what I think is the BIGGEST misconception about humility: People think humility is weakness.
But nothing could be further from the truth! Humility positions us for the best life we could possibly have. It equips our mind to get better and better every day. It opens the door for our next opportunity.

Pridefulness brings the opposite of all those things. Pridefulness is this sick lie that you tell yourself in order to hide your insecurity. Pridefulness is deceitful and destructive.
Being humble in no way means you're a pushover. Actually, in some ways, its the opposite. Humility makes you stronger.
Now, back to the 3 ways humility affects our practice.
Humility affects our practice because it affects:

  • US = Humility is the cornerstone of self-reflection
  • OTHERS = Humility promotes a prudent approach to all our relationships
  • CIRCUMSTANCES = Humility helps reveal the truth

Having humility means you don't let pride get in the way of your service or ability to empathize. It means you're careful with how you come across to others and don't play into the hierarchy of the world.
Proverbs 11:2 says...
"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom."
Humility is key to success in LIFE - let alone nursing!
REAL nurses stay humble…
What kind of nurse do you want to be?
What kind of person do you want to be?
