"Real Nurses" Series: 2 of 5
What makes a nurse stand out from the rest? How can one differentiate a nurse from a NURSE? I put together a list of values /characteristics that explains the difference, based on my personal opinion. When I think of the very best nurses out there - the ones I believe should be trusted, they have these characteristics and values!
To keep it short, I boiled it down to 5 things that mark an exceptional nurse:

REAL NURSES…

  1. RESPECT THE PROFESSION
  2. PUT IN THE WORK (this episode)
  3. STAY HUMBLE
  4. PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH
  5. LOVE LIFE & PEOPLE

I've separated each characteristic into it's own separate episode.
In this podcast we are discussing how to "PUT IN THE WORK".

A sure way to become the enemy on your team is to BE THE LAZY ONE. Some people think nursing is an easy profession because many of us work 3 days a week. But that's definitely not the case - on the contrary! Nurses are some of the hardest working people in healthcare.
Nursing is NOT for people who have no desire to grow, learn, and achieve something meaningful in life. It was always meant for people who PUT IN THE WORK.
Honestly, nothing in healthcare was designed for people who hate hard work.

Lazy nurses are crappy nurses and put patients' lives at risk. Mediocrity is evil.

We must be intentional. This means doing the things that will improve our practice and avoiding things that stunt our growth.

REAL nurses put in the work…
"What if I hate my current job as a nurse?!"

Trust me when I tell you, I KNOW HOW THAT FEELS. The first job I got after graduating from nursing school was rough. Although I learned A LOT, I was not happy as a full-time bedside ICU nurse. I spent years struggling with the thought of growing where I was in my career. Here's what I would have told myself if I could travel back in time: YOU HAVE OPTIONS! DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF!
Nursing the most versatile job in healthcare. This is one of the most beautiful things about our profession. You can easily pivot into a different area of nursing if you are not fulfilled with your current job.

It's CRITICAL that you determine if the reason why you shy away from growth at your workplace is because of your character (DOWNRIGHT LAZY) or if it's because the kind of work is highly unsatisfying and frustrating.
How can you expect to PUT IN THE WORK and do your BEST?

Also, putting in the work doesn't just mean get busy. Intensity of work is not as important as purposeful work. There's a difference between SMART and STUPID work. Make sure your motive for hard work is based on it's positive impact on the future. Will it get you closer to a desired result in this life?
Sometimes we must endure hard work
