Jan began his sporting career with a 10-year stint in the German national swim team between 1990 - 2000, whilst simultaneously completing studies at Harvard University with a degree in Economics. He then ventured into the investment banking world, however, his true calling drew him back to the sporting arena to the world of Triathlon.

Between 2001 and 2004, Jan went on to achieve four ‘first out of the water’ titles at the Ironman Hawaii World Championships and in 2004 Jan set the world record Ironman swim time of 42:17 at Ironman Germany in Frankfurt. Jan continued to compete professionally in the global triathlon circuit until 2007 when he founded Sailfish. The company expanded internationally and continues to set global standards as one of the world's best Triathlon brands, amongst both professionals and amateurs.

In 2018, Jan was unsettled with missing the fastest KONA swim time by just 6 seconds in 2003, so he launched a two-year comeback to finally break the Ironman World Championship swim record. At the age of 43, 17 years after his first appearance at the Hawaii Ironman Jan swam a blistering 46:29, of which the record still stands today. Between 2015 and 2019, Jan ran the Triathlon Convention Europe and between 2016 and 2021 Jan managed Patrick Langer 2x Ironman World Triathlon Champion.
