Today our guest is Charlie Weingroff who is a Physical Therapist, Personal Trainer, and Strength Conditioning Coach. Charlie is a member of the Nike Executive Performance Council and the Physical Performance Lead and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Canadian Men’s National Basketball Team. As a Physical Therapist, Charlie use a movement-based approach to rehabbing patients. He is also a weightlifter and achieved AAPF Elite Status in the 220 weight class with a total of 1915 pounds.

Charlie is a physical therapist, but he doesn’t see a difference between rehabbing and creating optimum performance. He broadens the edges of training and rehab because they both track back to the same end points. As a consultant, he looks at all of the systems. He utilizes a keen evaluation to employ certain strategies. His methods are applicable to people in all aspect of fitness. That is why he is a strength coach and physical therapist.

Today’s topics include:

  • Charlie goes out of his way to say thank-you to the other people who have helped him cultivate his practice
  • How do you know who is the right trainer for you? It’s not just a good physical therapist who knows how to coach lifts. There is a lot more to understanding physiology. These aren’t two separate things.
  • If you have a challenge to accomplish a task, the reason you are experiencing pain, is because you were not fit enough for the task that hurt you
  • Difference between instructing someone how to lift, as opposed to being a legitimate coach
  • There is a lot of depth in training that ties back into what a therapist would do
  • There is an enormous amount of physiology that drives a process that creates results
  • Find a therapist that understands lifting and fitness and also practices and walks the walk
  • People learn by doing,if they can’t perform it, they can’t coach it
  • Deadlift, pull-up, 10-minute mile any human should be able to do that, so should your therapist, if you can demonstrate this, you should appreciate what your client wants
  • When there is pain or a dysfunction that prevents you from performing, it’s from a combination of tissue hypoxia
  • The stronger you are, the more you can tolerate those processes
  • Movement-based approach where on the spectrum of working with someone, you want to find the best choices
  • If you don’t move well enough eventually, you will break, proper movement technique is important, a functional movement screening can help find whether a person is moving properly to prevent injury and increase fitness
  • Look for proper form and find exercises that are effective
  • In order to learn, you have to get a little uncomfortable
