Are you checked out of life because you can’t do what you use to be able to do? If you answered yes to any of these chances are your pain has self-sabotaged, you.

Guess what you hold the superpower to break free from this self-sabotage. You’re in control of this journey, not your pain, have you ever thought about that? You control your thoughts, emotions, and actions about your pain. Choose to lose the battle or put on your superhero cape and started winning and living.

Brain signals open and close your pain gate in the brain. An open gate equals more pain signals to the brain. Things that open the gate are depression, anger, and fear. Thought and feelings can affect how the brain feels pain and how we deal with pain. A lot of time we have unhelpful thoughts that affect how the brain feels pain and how we deal with pain with can open the gate. Unhelpful thoughts affect our body, emotions, and actions. Underdoing and overdoing such as no physical activity or too much like standing too long can open the gate. Even pain medication opens the gate sometimes by overtaking what is prescribed or taking it for a long time and it doesn’t work anymore.

When the pain gate is closed we have fewer pain signals to the brain. Things that close the gate might be: being active without overdoing; feeling positive; having hope; what we think and do can change how we feel by opening or closing the gate. Sometimes we aren’t aware of our thoughts, learn to be mindful of your negative thoughts and look for the positive. Finding your “new normal” when It comes to living with pain. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do focus on what you can do and what new interest you might have. When you have pain, pleasant activities are often pushed aside. It is important to do the things you find joy in, despite the pain when it comes to staying positive. Find new ways to do the things you enjoy.

So today is a new day, put your superhero cape on and be your own pain gatekeeper. Closing your pain gate allows you to be in control of this one big, beautiful gift of life you have been given to you. Don’t let your pain self-sabotage this gift.
