Welcome to Winephabet Street Season 2 Episode 10 - J is for Jura. Winephabet Street is a monthly series where Lori Budd of Draceana Wines and I work our way through the alphabet exploring wine and wine regions one letter at a time. The show is live on the third Monday at 8pm and is free, but you must register to attend. Put it on your calendar, pour yourself a glass of wine and hang out with us.

The month of July saw us visiting the Jura region of France. Known as Franche-Comte it is located between Burgundy and Switzerland. In 2016 the Franche-Comte region was joined with Burgundy to form a new administrative entity of Bourgogne-Franche-Comte.

There are 4 main appellations in Jura:

Arbois - the first appellation d’Origine Controlee, France appointed

Chateau-Chalon - home of Vin Jaune

Letoile - Chablis of Jura. Known for good Chardonnay wines and Cremants du Jura

Cotes du Jura - catch-all appellation for all the wines made in the region.

The wine I chose for this episode is one I found in my cellar. A 2011 Cotes du Jura by Jean Bourdy. Jean Bourdy is one of the oldest Domaines in the Jura region being founded between 1475 and 1500.

Unfortunately, the wine was past its prime. A bit oxidated. Sometimes you just never know. It goes to show you that it’s not always beautiful and tasty. I am sure this wine in its prime was a wonderful wine and a great vintage.
