Welcome to Winephabet Street Season 2 Episode 12 L is for Lugana.

Winephabet Street is a monthly series where Lori Budd of Draceana Wines and I work our way through the alphabet exploring wine and wine regions one letter at a time. The show is live on the third Monday at 8pm and is free, but you must register to attend. Put it on your calendar, pour yourself a glass of wine and hang out with us.

This episode we were lucky to have as a special guest Susannah Gold. Susannah is the Lugana’s East Coast Brand Manager and Founder, of Vigneto Communications. Susannah is so knowledgeable on Lugana!

Lugana DOC sits on the southern shore of Lake Garda in Lombardy and in the Provence of Verona. The wine, made from Turbiana grape is a beautiful white wine crafted in 5 distinct styles. Susannah talks all about the Lugana DOC, the wine and food pairings.

For more information on Lugana and the Turbiana grape, I recently wrote two articles on Lugana and they can be found at https://hudsonvalleywinegoddess.com/turbiana-the-grape-the-wine/ and https://hudsonvalleywinegoddess.com/lugana-and-turbiana-the-jewel-of-lake-garda/

Lugana Wines

Susannah was nice enough to send us two samples of Lugana wine. Most wines are aged in stainless steel and are nice and crisp with mineral notes and nice acidity.

2018 Podere Selva Capuzza Lugana DOC - On the shores of Lake Garda Selva Capuzza is a winery, restaurant, farmhouse and truffle ground. The first vintage of this wine was produced in 1983. The vineyard the Turbiana is grown in is at an evelation between 110 and 125 meters above sea level. It has a rich presence of stone. The grapes are hand harvested and vinification takes place in steel tanks.

The wine has beautiful aromas of white flowers, salinity, citrus. The palate is fresh and crisp, hints of minerality, citrus and peach. A beautiful wine!

2018 Citari Conchiglia Lugana DOC - A family winery that was founded in 1975. The 25 hectares are south facing on morainic soils mixed with calcareous clays rich in mineral salts. The vines are 25 years old. The wine is aged in steel for seven months and six of those months are spent on the lees. There is a freshness about the wine with notes of lemon curd and white peach with hints of minerality. The wine has a creamy texture, balanced and medium + bodied.

If you see a bottle of Lugana DOC wines, reach for it. You won’t be disappointed.
