Erika Vujnovich is a former Ivy League tennis player who is now raising two athletes of her own: a 16-year old nationally ranked tennis player and a 13-year old baseball player. She is a true sports enthusiast with a passion discussing sports parenting issues as well as the importance of introducing sports to children at a young age.
Erika's Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. Being a sports parent means juggling: finances (camps, clubs, private lessons, teams, sports psychologists, gear), work schedules, social schedules with friends, and spending quality time with family, knowing it will mean missing out on special occasions, because being there for big tournaments and games is important to the athlete's future.
  2. Being an athlete means sacrifice and a lingering feeling of, "Are we missing something," which leads to a lot of stress.
  3. Erika's best advice to new moms is to get kids involved in sports as soon as possible because of the many benefits:
    • discipline
    • teaches maturity
    • teaches how to deal with losses
    • teaches how to celebrate wins without being obnoxious about it
    • teaches confidence
    • teaches how to be healthy
    • teaches mental toughness on the court and in the classroom
  4. In sports, there are winners and losers, and we must acknowledge that our children are going to lose.
  5. There is nothing like the feeling of connection for sports moms. (So please join Jentle Coaching for the first Facebook Live Sports Mom Connection Call on Tuesday, February 13, at 7pm ET)
  6. Have fun.

Check out Kirsten Jones' #RaisingAthletes podcast and her new book, Raising Empowered Athletes. It is an incredible resource for parents of athletes and anyone who enjoys listening to podcasts about sports (which is you, if you're still here ;-)
