Inner Critic work is central to living authentically, so in this episode we take a deep dive into what it is, what function it serves, and how to live a joyful life alongside it. I begin by defining what our Inner Critic is, and explain that it’s ultimate goal is a benevolent one: it wants to keep us safe. Historically, and even today our inner critic plays its part. It helps us pre-empt disaster, apply scepticism and prioritize critical thinking. The shadow side of this executive function, however, is that there is no room for empathy for self, expansive thinking and creativity, because all of these things require risk taking and stepping into the unknown, which the Inner Critic does not allow. I illustrate more limitations our Inner Critic imposes and posit that in order to live the most expansive version of our lives, we need tools to subdue it. I then walk you through 3 tools you can implement immediately: giving your Inner Critic a personality, recognising your Inner Critic as merely a thought which can always be changed, and acknowledging, thanking and ‘relieving’ your Inner Critic from the duty of mental bodyguard.
