The genre-bending, multi-instrumentalist songwriting duo Frances Luke Accord (Brian Powers and Nicholas Gunty) are changing the dynamic of Chicago's folk scene one DIY venture at a time. From their debut project, the non-profit benefit record Kandote, to their house-concert/video series Fluke Takes, FLA have grounded themselves beyond any ordinary indie-folk band. Brian Powers and Nicholas Gunty came to Chicago in 2013 from another burgeoning midwest music hub, South Bend, Indiana. They currently operate the production wing of the band from their northwest-side Chicago apartment, where they've recorded and produced all their present material, as well as a growing collection of work by fellow Chicago DIYers. When Brian and Nicholas came in to record this show I became a Fan immediately. Their lyrics and harmonies are soaring and beautiful. It is impossible not to compare them to Simon and Garfunkel. They have honed their voices into this beautiful music machine. I was a 10 on the goosebump...
Ask Your Folks is a Chicago-based trio comprised of vocals, guitar, fiddle, and string bass. Owen Burton (guitar), Libby Weitnauer (fiddle), and Eli Broxham (bass), began playing together during their freshman year as music students at DePaul University. In August of 2013 they started playing at local farmer's markets and formed Ask Your Folks. Since their founding they have done a southern tour, released their debut album, and played in countless venues around Chicago. Trained in a variety of styles, each member has brought aspects of their favorite genres--such as folk, old time, bluegrass, jazz, and rock--to the group. With a goal of creating new, relevant music by drawing on traditional American styles, Ask Your Folks' eclectic style is as intriguing as it is entertaining. This is one from our lost and found department. My apologies to Ask Your Foks. This was a wonderful Podcast and, even though it's late, I am certain you will enjoy the show. All the Videos from this show on Vimeo

A native of the Missouri Ozarks, Jodee Lewis was raised on folk songs and honky-tonk, and her music reflects the best of both worlds. The Chicago Tribune says she is "a singer-songwriter whose outsized talent is as big as her voice," and calls her first album, Whiskey Halo, an "impressive solo debut". Already this year, her single from the album, In The End, was chosen as the first place winner in the 16th annual Great American Songwriting Contest. Another single from the album, From A Bottle, took runner-up in the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) in the country category. Whiskey Halo has also been nominated for country album of the year in the 14th annual Independent Music Awards (IMA). Lewis trained in classical piano and began playing guitar and writing music after moving to Chicago in 1999 with her husband, Chad. Growing up in a small town, Lewis sang in her church gospel choir and with her grandfather's country band, eventually attending Washington University in St...

Last August, from Louisville, Kentucky into the studio comes Ted Stevens. My first take was here's a Rocker dressed up and ready to take the stage. I thought, this is gonna be fun, and I was not disappointed. Ted, the leader of "Ted Stevens and the Third Rail", just had that look where if you saw him walking down the street you'd say to yourself "that guy has to be a rock star". Well, guess what, you would be right with one exception, he is not an asshole. He is one of the nicest guys I have met in ten years of recording these shows. Perhaps the 4 years he lived and played in Scotland had a positive influence on his persona, but, make no mistake; this musician is a credit to Louisville. Here he is in a stripped down solo acoustic set that kicks ass! Obviously, I love this guy! Enjoy!!!Check out all 4 videos from Ted's show on the CAU Vimeo Channel

With nearly a decade behind a Nashville honky tonk bar and countless nights playing solo shows on the road under her belt, Samantha Harlow has plenty of stories to tell. A true raconteur, Harlow's storytelling is marked by mild exaggerations, tongue-in-cheek declarations, and sweeping truths about being a strong woman making her way in the world. Backed by a steel guitar and twangy riffs, Harlow shares tales of heartbreaks past and present - and, more importantly, her resolve to move past them. She's a country artist, to be sure, but not in the folksy, teary-eyed connotation of the title. Fueled by strong and pragmatic Midwestern roots, Harlow's lyrics are equal parts heartbreak and pulling oneself up by the straps on a pair of boots. Previous albums (Boxcars and Other Obsolete Dreams, Love Letters) have detailed her childhood memories of broken family bonds and lofty dreams torn down by the reality of divorce and blue-collar woes. But on her latest cut (Give and Take), Harlow turns over...

Jen Reilly and Eddy Bluma aka The New Zeitgeist met as solo artists reentering the music scene in Chicago of 2009, but might as well have been around since 1929. "Old souls," they have been described by many, the two began collaborating as a folk duo with soulful harmonies and old spirituals. Their devotions range from Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie to Elvis, Joni, The Staple Singers, and Allison Krauss. Their upcoming first and full-length album attempts to capture the timeless and undying spirit of the ages, entitled the "New Zeitegists," (pronounced zī¬¬-tÄ-gÄsts). Their coined word, New Zeitegists implies a revolution as well as a return to the simple things and things that matter; a return to "geist"-spirit, soul, and body. Previous to living in Chicago, in the spring of 2009 Jen Reilly spent four months living at an artists' colony developing her skills and experience in songwriting, performing, and recording at the Contemporary Music Center, an invitation-only community on...
Brittany Lee Moffitt is a professional vocalist, songwriter, and performer from the small town of New Carlisle, Indiana. Brittany moved to Chicago in 2005 to study music at Columbia College. During that time, Brittany was offered an opportunity to represent the music department as a participating singer/songwriter in the 2009 International Summer Music Camp, held by kraut-rock pioneer, drummer, and instructor Udo Dahmen at Popakademie School of Music in Mannheim, Germany. She also shared the stage with artists Earth, Wind, and Fire, vocalist Mina Agossi, and drummer Dana Hall while studying at Columbia. Graduating in 2010, Brittany soon found herself performing in several original and cover band projects, showcasing an array of vocal styles from jazz to hard rock, never missing an opportunity to entertain, experience, and learn. In December 2013, Brittany embarked on her first solo tour as a singer/songwriter along the east coast, performing in Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., and...
