On this episode I catch up with the extraordinary yet humble Tony Lymon. He is a polyglot of talents and interests who grew up in one of the poorest areas in the USA. I was so fortunate to know Tony and become his friend during college. I was a huge fan during his Jam-Rock phase with King Konga. This is a long one but there are so many gems to learn from Tony. We talk about race and classism. We also go in deep on high school band and its critical role in education. Tony's non traditional path to completing his education is also enlightening. Tony Lyom is the former Assistant Director of Bands at Petal High School in Petal, Mississippi and currently is the co-music arranger/show designer for the Petal High School marching band. Tony is the director show designer for the Petal Indoor Percussion Theatre, a national WGI Percussion Scholastic World Finalist. He has twice been awarded the Outstanding Junior High Director of the Southeast Mississippi Band Directors Association and the 2008 Mississippi Bandmasters Association AE McClain Outstanding Young Band Director Award. Tony was also the Founder and Director of Eminence Indoor Percussion Ensemble, a regional and national WGI Open Class finalist and championship ensemble. Tony holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Certification in 3D Architectural Rendering from The 3D Training Institute of New York. He was a member and principal percussionist in the world renowned Southern Miss Wind Ensemble and Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra. While at Southern Miss, Tony was the percussion arranger for the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band and USM indoor percussion ensemble. Tony was also a member of the World Champion Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps (Bloomington, IN) from 1991-1993. In his three years of DCI experience, he won the DCI-Midwest Solo Timpani Champion and the 1994 Percussive Arts Society International Solo Timpani Award. Tony's original marimba composition "Of Thoughts and Thinking" has become a standard in percussion literature. The piece was most recently recorded by German percussion artist Cornelia Monkse on the CD "Marimba 2" and was featured in the French documentary film "Le Ciel." After college, Tony pursued a professional performance career for eight years with the pop/rock band King Konga . While with King Konga, Tony toured the world selling out venues in nationwide. The group did a post September 11th USO tour for the US Military in Hawaii and South East Asia. The four-piece band gained critical acclaim reaching #81 on the AC Hot 100 Pop Charts with "Something Good." With a rare accomplishment by an independent band, King Konga captured the eyes and ears of many major record labels and the band went on to perform at Woodstock '99. Tony has also performed with The Mississippi Symphony, Mobile Opera, Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera and The Meistersingers Orchestral/Choral Ensemble. Tony recently wrapped up a season as the sound designer for The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in 2018 and currently serves as Creative Designer for Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps. He is the owner of Eidetic Creative, a multimedia creative designs solution business. He currently resides in Petal, Mississippi with his wife Emily and 13 year-old daughter Colette.…

On this episode, I am excited to introduce you to Lekeshia Jarrett, M.D. She is an amazing person and we focus on her background and evolution as both a mother and family medicine physician. She is the cornerstone of a power couple with her husband Christopher Jarrett. Chris has a cameo but really deserves an episode of his own. She earned her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and she completed her internship and residency in Family Practice and Community Medicine at the University of South Alabama. She is board certified in family medicine. Dr. Christopher Jarrett received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Internship and Residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Ranawat Orthopaedic Center, Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Dr. Raymond Young is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University. He is the Division Chief of Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Services for Emory Healthcare. In his role Dr. Young is responsible for development and expansion of psychiatric consultation liaison services for Emory Healthcare. Along with his position as Division Chief of Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Services for Emory Healthcare, Dr. Young is the Program Director for Emory Healthcare’s Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship Program. His clinical interests include telemedicine, geriatrics, organ transplantation, and functional neurological disorders. Jane P. Gagliardi, MD, MHS, FACP, DFAPA completed medical school, residency training in combined internal medicine-psychiatry, and her masters of health science in the clinical research training program at Duke, where she has remained on faculty since completing residency training. Dr. Gagliardi has been involved in the educational programs in the Department of Medicine, where she served as Clerkship Director and Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for nearly a decade through June, 2014 and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, where she served as the Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Training Program from 2011 till 2013, Director of the Psychiatry Residency Training Program from 2013 through 2019, and Director of the Medicine-Psychiatry Residency Training Program starting in 2019. She has been the Vice Chair for Education since 2014. She is a small group leader in the medical school Clinical Skills course and founded and co-directs the medical school Evidence-Based Medicine course. Dr. Gagliardi is particularly interested in the interplay between patient safety measures, various pressures in medicine including implementation of the electronic health record, and medical education, and she has worked to develop and encourage projects in patient safety and quality improvement. Taylor is a trail and ultra runner based in Washington, DC where his lives with his awesome wife, Sarah. He spends his days working with media companies as a Management Consultant, and his nights and weekends running, traveling, learning new things, and advocating for Mental Health. Taylor and I first met at the inaugural Rob Krar Trail Running Camp in Flagstaff 5 years ago. Today we recall the camp and then talk about his background, how he got into running and his journey to becoming an advocate for suicide and mental health awareness. We recorded this at the end of of May before the national outrage about institutionalized racism in police and legal institutions. I hope we can move past the defensiveness and accept responsibility so we can institute change that will allow all Americans to trust and work with law enforcement. I support protesting and I urge public health, law enforcement and other civic agencies adopt policies to allow safer protesting during a pandemic. Tracy Beth Høeg, MD, PhD works in private practice Sports and Spine Medicine with Northern California Orthopaedic Associates. She is also a voluntary assistant professor at UC Davis Department of PM&R. She is an active researcher with UC Davis and Stanford and works as a journalist for UltraRunning Magazine. She has four children and is married to Rasmus Hoeg, MD. They live in Kings Beach, California. We have a wide ranging discussion on her education, research and experience. The pandemic so far and a deep dive on ortho-biologic medicine (aka Regenerative Medicine) including PRP and stem cell soft tissue injections. On our 2nd Episode I interview Chaplain Robin Joo who is currently a fellow in Medical Spiritual Counseling at UCSF. Originally a Long Beach native, Robin Joo moved to West Covina, CA upon graduating St. Patrick's Seminary & University with an M.A., M. Div., and S.T.B. in Moral Theology and Eschatology. Robin also completed his undergraduate studies at U.C. Riverside with an emphasis in Business Administration. He is an instituted Acolyte of the Roman Catholic Church and serves the greater community as a medical chaplain and spiritual counselor. As a medical chaplain, he has served in four hospitals which includes work in fields of acute care, oncology, palliative care, hospice, home-health, cardiothoracic vascular transplant (CVT) and bioethics. He was once discerning the call to priesthood but has since decided to be a lay interfaith chaplain with an openness to marriage. He was a professional sports-fisherman/guide prior to entering the seminary and his hobbies include football, fishing, hunting, Olympic archery, playing chess and reading books on cosmology and astrophysics.
