Today I am prescribing mindfulness. What is mindfulness? It is a mental state or attitude in which one focuses one's awareness on the present moment while also being conscious of, and attentive to, this awareness. Also: the cultivation and practice of this, esp. as a therapeutic technique. Frequently attributive, as mindfulness meditation, etc. Frequently and originally with reference to Yoga philosophy and Buddhism, but from the late 20th cent. increasingly taught and practiced outside these contexts as a formal discipline, often involving meditation with a focus on, or acknowledgement of, one's emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations.
