In the second part of our three week sequence on character relationships in post-apocalyptic narratives, we discuss Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 novel The Road. Before diving into McCarthy, we discuss the media we encountered this week, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh to Grand Theft Auto V character roleplay. We then discuss McCarthy’s body of work before diving into the themes of this novel. We elaborate on reading this text as a parable of environmental catastrophe (along with a discussion of ecocriticism in literature), the relationship between the father and son, reading the novel philosophically through Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the ruthless, nihilistic vision of McCarthy’s world, the distinction between high and low art and where McCarthy fits into that schema, McCarthy’s writing of women, and many more. Jeff also frequently digresses by lamenting the state of James Franco’s atrocious literary adaptations, the 2009 adaptation of the Road, and his inability to read Harry Potter as high literary culture. Join us for a rowdy episode!
