Yeah I know, I didn't hear anything about this movie either...
...darn you Dr. Strange! Despite all the publicity for this movie being sucked out by Marvel's Dr. Strange, Arrival may very well be one of the top movies of 2016; in particular top science fiction movies of 2016. It may also very well be one of the best alien contact movies ever. Sorry E.T...
Arrival stars Amy Adams, as Dr. Louise Banks an expert in linguistics, & Jeremy Renner, as Dr. Ian Donnelly a theoretical physicist. It's directed by Denis Villenueve, known for Sicario and will soon be known for the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049. As the movie opens you find out aliens have arrived at different locations throughout Earth, including USA, China, & Russia, and Adams & Renner get roped into helping the US government (led by Colonel Weber played by my man Forest Whitaker) establish communication with the aliens. Like any movie dealing with imaginary subjects, since we have no way to even fathom what aliens would look like, the story eventually becomes less about the aliens and more about the reality we can fathom. How would geopolitical relationships between humans all over the world be impacted? Who would we want to talk to aliens?
Arrival is packaged as a "uh-oh, what do these aliens want?!" movie, which it is, but it goes much deeper than that. Amy Adams' character breaks mold by not only being a female in a largely male-driven genre, but by using linguistic tools & scientific method to take charge in communicating with the aliens and by doing so, her character faces both deep physical & emotional challenges. Think Contact meets Interstellar. I really enjoyed it, maybe because I knew nothing about it other than nerds all over are gushing about Arrival, and it made me think about a theoretical physicist's suggested explanation as to why humans have yet to see any tangible evidence of alien life, despite knowing there's a high probability that extra-terrestrial life exists. One theoretical physicist suggests all lifeforms wipe themselves out via political turmoil before they can develop interstellar travel. Suffice it to say Arrival is maaaad deep, yo, and the more it's settled into my brain the more I think the movie deserves every one of the 5, of 5, Chinese Generals I gave it.
