Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a dolphin trainer? Join the Amys for a deep dive into the world of aquatic and exotic animal training with Ashley Conlin, IAABC CDBC, IAABC ADT, and owner of Pets Behave Dog Training in sunny Niceville, Florida, as they discuss the most important element in every training relationship - TRUST.
Before shifting her focus to dogs, Ashley worked with dolphins, stingrays, sharks, sea turtles, alligators, and birds in zoos and aquariums around the world. She knows all about the patience, learning theory, and creativity required when conditioning dolphins to station for a blood draw. Let’s be honest, you can’t put a shock collar on a dolphin.

So, why are some dog “trainers” still using outdated, inhumane techniques and promoting disproven, unscientific theories to justify their methods? Why is it even allowed? When will the dog training industry as a whole, wake up and smell the big, stinky bucket of thawed fish and squid that is aversive and punishment-based training? When will we ban the use of fear, force, and pain in favor of science, trust, and FUN?
Grab your wetsuit and a cocktail, as we explore the curiosities of cetacean communication and behavior during episode 11 of the Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys veterinary behavior podcast. (Or, should I say “Pod”cast? 🤔)
