Yes, I attempted suicide in 2013. Since then, intentionally getting outside of my comfort zone and learning how to be vulnerable have completely changed my mindset and have saved my life. It's now my mission to normalize conversations that we don't have in public and to help others embrace discomfort and vulnerability so they can live their best life.
Here's what happened.
In 2013, I had no idea how to deal with the daily stresses of life. I didn't talk to anybody about any of the struggles I was dealing with and I thought that I had to "just be a man" and push through it.
But I was totally unhappy and overwhelmed. I wanted to change so many things about my life and knew that in order to do that, I would have to have so many uncomfortable conversations with the people I cared about the most. So instead of dealing with my problems one step at a time, I decided to attempt suicide.
If I took myself out of this world, I couldn't disappoint anybody... that was my thought process.
Sad, right!?
Unfortunately, there are millions of people around the world that think the same way. They think they're alone in their struggles. They think they're broken. They think they're a burden to the people around them. They think there's only one way out.
Quick stat for ya: According to the CDC, in 2019,

  • "Suicide was the SECOND leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the FOURTH leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44."

This is SO ALARMING! And this is why a big part of my mission is to normalize conversations about suicide, mental health, depressions, anxiety, and so many other topics. We need to talk about these things more often so we can actually do something about it (rant over, kind of lol)
In 2018, I made the commitment to myself to intentionally step outside my comfort zone over and over again so I could learn how to deal with discomfort, fear, and stress. And it worked.
Every time I did something, like learning to drive a NASCAR, vlogging for the very first time, or doing a nude photo shoot, I became more familiar with my fight or flight response and how to get passed it.
This mental training, or mental bootcamp, has helped me build the confidence to "figure it out" no matter what situation I'm put in. It's taught me that more people have my back than I ever thought and that the other people are going to judge you anyways, so you might as well do what you want.
And it's shown me how to be my weird, wonderful, quirky, adventurous, and AUTHENTIC SELF. And now, it's the only way to live life.
I embrace discomfort and vulnerability on a regular basis and use it to pursue the life of my dreams. My hope is that this podcast and these stories help you to do the same.
