She awakened from her short slumber and looked out into this strange new world. It was still dark. She was now fully confident that, this, was her current uncomfortable reality. Accepting this, she needed to clear her head and, figure out where she stood. She poked her head outside of her tent for a breath of fresh air, and then heard the bones scraping towards her, she hid herself back into the tent. The monster had walked around the tent the night but, for some reason or another, the beast hadn’t figured to strike against it. But, she didn’t complain, it worked to her advantage. Since she couldn’t rest she began to take a mental note of all the things she had on her. The list of items; her axe, shield, taser, small pistol firearm, larger firearm, bullets, megaphone, bulletproof vest, and fireproof gear vest. After looking through her gear vests, she came across a walkie-talkie, grabbed it and turned it on. She heard voices chatter, they were talking about conquering a foreign kingdom, and about the insolence of a king. As they rattled on, it sounded like something out of one of Homer’s epics, or from the stories of Alexander. She attempted to respond, but to no avail.

The sun began to rise and it’s sunlight cascaded into the tent. The young woman started to hear burning and the sounds of bones cracking. She looked out of the tent and saw the bony monster aflame. With its last motions, it brought its bow to the ready, and then disappeared into a cloud of dust and smoke. She saw some bones and a few arrows; where the creature had once been. She went back inside, she knew the monster’s demise was a praise worthy thing, but she couldn’t help but feel a little confused.

She gathered her gear, vests, shield, and weapons. She left her tent and began to walk towards a river. She looked around, and saw no one and took the opportunity to cleanse herself of the smell of smoke and ash from the fire of her old city of New York. She had also worked up a sweat in the night, having slept with her clothes on. She began to strip down, putting her equipment aside, she took off her shirt and her pants and dusted off all the ash and dust from the previous day. She carefully laid it out upon a rock to let it air out. She undid her pony tail, letting her curly hair free, allowing the sun to hit her dark brown skin. The combination of the warm sun and the slight breeze in the air was the first bit of relief that she had gotten since she had, gotten to… wherever she was. The young woman dipped her foot into the cool water before immersing her whole body in.

Then she remembered the conversation she had heard from her walkie-talkie, she grabbed her walkie-talking and thought of trying, again, to message back. There had been no response the previous night, she hesitated. Now she was thinking, with a clearer head, and was unsure if these people would be friendly. There was just the crackle of static on the radio. She pressed the button to talk, “Hello, anyone hear me?” There was no response, much to the relief of the woman. She grabbed her clothes and dressed. She began to walk towards her tent, and took a small drink from up the river, and then heard a static hiss from the walkie-talkie followed by a southern-accented voice, “Hello?”.
