In this episode, I’m sharing my passion for Jungian film theory. I’ve been wanting to incorporate my thoughts about the deeper meaning of movies into my podcast. I guess my second viewing of the movie Poor Things pushed me over the procrastination edge.
The fact that I could not immediately articulate how this film – Poor Things – impacted my psyche was a clue that it was communicating something new.
I couldn’t think of a better person to have this conversation with than my friend and former colleague, PJ Dever. He’s one of those friends that you can chat with for hours and wonder where the time has gone.
PJ is a nonprofit leader working out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in New Jersey where he also went to college. He grew up in a household with an amazing father and three sisters. He and his partner spend time hiking, camping, and traveling. He has an intense love of stories and ensures that his life is filled with interesting books, people, and movies.
For years, our conversations naturally gravitated towards films and Netflix series whether they were blockbusters that appealed to the masses or more niche films.
In today's episode, I share a little bit about Jungian film theory, specifically three concepts: (1) CG Jung’s discernment between psychological and visual art; (2) Luke Hockley's concept of the third imag; and (3) Jung’s idea about the difference between symbol and sign. And then PJ and I get into it.
Enjoy!
