When you are stressed your body releases hormones such as cortisol that turn on functions that are essential for your immediate survival.

Acute stress is helpful and healthy in the sense that it will help you win a race or beat a looming deadline for work.

Chronic stress is not good and could cause insulin resistance, weight gain, increased inflammation, elevated cholesterol levels and hypertension. For some people, once they learn how to manage stress and reduce cortisol they will lose that last bit of belly fat.

One of the best ways to know if you are chronically stressed is to measure your heart rate variability. You can buy a wearable like Whoop or Oura ring to monitor your HRV.

HRV is the variability in the amount of time between each heartbeat and can be used to track your nervous system health and recovery status. A high HRV indicates low state of stress and vice versa. Tracking your HRV allows you to see if you are overstressing your body, producing excess cortisol or becoming resistant to weight loss.

What can you do to manage stress?

Pick one or more of these to implement into your weekly routine:

Yoga, Meditation, Walk in Nature, Breathwork or CBD can be effective as well. Check out this study regarding CBD helping with stress and sleep.
