It’s always an appropriate time to discuss boundaries! I begin by defining boundaries and conveying that they are a tool for connecting, rather than dividing. I explain that they aren’t a means to control or manipulate, nor are they a set of rules to dole out to others. Rather, boundaries are a standard you hold yourself to, and their violation triggers a response you and you alone are required to uphold. I illustrate the benefits of healthy boundaries, and detail what a lack of them looks like. I walk you through the steps of healthy boundary setting and how to communicate them effectively, and discuss the best frame of mind to be in when expressing your boundaries. Ultimately, the responsibility of creating, maintaining and enforcing boundaries and their consequences - is yours alone. If boundary setting makes you feel mean, bad or guilty then you might have people-pleasing tendencies that need to be addressed.
