Today’s episode is going to hit deep. We're diving into a gripping, emotional, and ultimately empowering story about sisterhood, survival, and reclaiming your voice. My guest is Puja Shah, author of the powerful novel- For My Sister. The book is about twin sisters Amla and Asya who go from living in a small village to moving to Mumbai to being sold in flesh trade. Their lives spiral into pain, loss, and isolation... but somehow, they survive. Separately. And against all odds, they reunite years later. This isn’t just a story about human trafficking—it’s about what it takes to live again after trauma, the complicated but unbreakable bond between sisters, and how women, even in the harshest conditions, find ways to rise. If you're a woman who’s ever felt silenced, stuck, or unsure of your own strength—this conversation is for you. We'll talk about emotional survival, the mental health impact of trauma, the guilt women often carry, and what healing can really look like. You can help me bring more such conversations to you by following the podcast and by rating and reviewing us. I am grateful to you. When I was a new mom, I wanted to be a supermom like the ones portrayed in the media- 10 hands and doing something different and supposedly productive with each of them. I found it powerful without realizing that it was actually stressing me out. Realistically koi bhi itni sari cheezen ek time pe nahi kar sakta hai- bachche ka dhyan rakho, khana banao, ghar dekho, family ka dhyan rakho, relax karo, workout karo aur phir jab bachcha bada ho jaye to uske school se leke after school activities dekho aur baki sab to karna hi hai. Oh and if you have a job besides all of this unpaid work, consider the load doubled. Hume lagta hai ki wah humare paas to superpower hai hum sab kar lenge par isse hota hai burnout, stress and lots of other mental and physical health issues. This is one of those discussions that never gets old and when done right provides good takeaways. I am discussing all of this with author Bhakti Mathur. If you are an Indian mother, you are probably familiar with Bhakti Mathur’s Amma tell Me series. It’s a series of children’s picture books about Indian festivals and mythology. After a long stint as a banker, she now juggles her time between her writing, her passion for yoga and long-distance running, and her family. She lives in Hong Kong with her husband, their two children and two dogs. She is also the author of Amma, Take Me Series. The latest addition to the series is Amma, Take Me to the Hill Forts of Rajasthan which my daughter loved and so did I. In this episode, Bhakti and I talk about the idea of a good mother, mom-guilt, equal marriage, mental load and how to overcome the overwhelm of it all. Help me bring more such conversations to you, please follow Little Fixes on your podcast app, rate us and share with your mom-friends. Today we are getting into people-pleasing. A lot of us don’t even know that we are people pleasers and are probably being treated like doormats. And that’s why this conversation becomes even more important. I am speaking with Preeti Sharma who happens to be my best friend. Preeti is the Product Operation Lead at Quora and a micro-blogger on Instagram. She has taught me a lot in the last 7 years of knowing her. From scaling my social media business to upgrading my mindset. She is a firecracker of a human and it was difficult for me to believe that she is a recovering people pleaser. And because of these seemingly opposite traits, she is the right person to tell how not to be a human doormat. Preeti tells us- -Her story of becoming a people pleaser -How it impacted her mental health -how she realised that she was a people-pleaser -how she is becoming less of a people pleaser -how she reached where she is now and how you can too. This episode contains references to chronic diseases and death. Please use your discretion before listening. Grief isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s as unique as each of us. In this heartfelt episode, we’re diving into the deeply personal experience of grief with my guest who opens up about her own journey of loss and healing. Together, we’ll talk about how grief can look different for everyone, the unexpected ways it can show up in our lives, and why there’s no “right” way to grieve. Our guest shares how she navigated the pain of losing people she loved and ultimately found herself in the process. Whether you’re in the thick of grief, supporting someone who is, or just curious about how we grow through loss, this conversation will leave you feeling seen, inspired, and hopeful. Join us as we explore the beauty and resilience that can emerge from even the darkest times. I am speaking with Gunjan Pai who is the founder of boutique brand strategy and copywriting studio, Copylove. She began her 22-year-old career as a copywriter with Ogilvy & Mather and Lowe Lintas. She then transitioned to building Copylove. While she was building the agency, her husband was diagnosed with a chronic disease and passed away a few years after that. Now Gunjan not only had to keep her business going but she also had to raise her young son. As if this wasn’t hard enough, soon after her husband’s death, she got more bad news regarding her mother and mother-in-law. Gunjan says that she did not have time to reflect on her losses and grieve. She had to pick herself and keep going but that didn’t go well for her. Let’s hear from Gunjan how she took back control, how she came to terms with her situation, what helped her during her toughest times and what helps her now. It’s a vulnerable discussion on sorrow and strength which is going to act as a ray of hope for anyone who listens to it so please share with someone who needs it. I am a feminist and I feel that we all should be feminists. If you didn’t know, feminism doesn’t mean female superiority. It means equity and equality for women. And yes it’s still very much relevant because women are nowhere equal to men whether at workplaces or at homes. Talking about feminism is very important to me and this episode is all about it. I’m speaking with Dr. Madhurima Vidyarthi who is an accomplished author besides being an endocrinologist. I read her book The School for Bad Girls and was shocked by how little we know about women’s condition in previous centuries. Even more shocking was the fact that a lot of things are still the same for us. Women have progressed but the men and society as a whole hasn’t progressed as much. Madhurima’s book is about one of India’s first doctors Dr. Kadambini Ganguly but it’s way more than a story. In the episode, author Dr. Madhurima Vidyarthi and I talk about feminism, marriage, men’s role in society, patriarchy, life and a few things we can do to create a society of equals. We discuss both history and the current scenario. Lots to think about and even more to take away, so join us. Please spread the message of feminism by sharing this episode with your friends and family. Fat, thin, dark, light, big nose, small eyes, thin lips, flat chest- there are tons of ways to describe a body and these terms form our body image. Most of us have the tendency to criticize our bodies. I too am guilty of this and am struggling with a poor body image even today. Our families and society have passed on this body image to us and we are transferring it to our kids without being fully aware of it. To add to this, kids these days are exposed to way too many images through social media and other platforms. Even though there are discussions around inclusivity and body neutrality, the perfect 10 figure is still the ideal. Besides this, a child suffering from hair and skin issues, health problems or disability is still sniggered at. We don’t realize their struggles and have no idea what they are feeling every day. We have to look beyond the body and so when I came across the book Hug Yourself curated by Vinitha, I instantly decided to have her on the podcast. Vinitha has written over 25 books tailored for children and young adults. Her book Hug Yourself has Body Positivity and Empowerment Stories for Teenagers. It’s A Powerful Anthology of 16 Stories Featuring Prominent Writers Like Anuja Chandramouli, Harshikaa Udasi and Santhini Govindan among Others. In my view, Everyone needs to read this book from teenagers to adults of all ages. In this episode we talk about- - Vinitha’s observations on today’s teens and body image - Her and my struggles with body image - How have things changed from when Vinitha was young to now - What can be done to make things better - How we parents can help kids in building a positive body image Please help me bring more such conversations to you by sharing this episode with your friends- just copy the link and send over whatsapp, email or a simple text message. Too old, too young, not good enough, too good for this- we have many such notions but thankfully people are talking about these limiting beliefs and we are seeing inspiring stories of people doing things in their own time at their own pace. I have one such inspiring woman’s story for you. Namrata Lodha launched Myaraa hats at the age of 52. It was her first venture and this entrepreneurship journey started in a living room. The idea was to (re)introduce the concept of hats as an accessory but with a unique design element in it. Inspired by the natural grass fiber baskets from her childhood home in Madhya Pradesh, Namrata designs these accessories with the same material. This production empowers rural women whose families abandoned them for marrying outside their community or being a widow. The company makes work accessible in rural India for these women making sure that when you buy a sunny hat it comes bundled with the social and financial empowerment of a woman. This is a story of breaking norms and also of family support and giving back to society. Listen in to get inspired and share it with your friends. How to talk to children about body boundaries. Even the mention of child sexual abuse scares us parents and so we are always looking for ways to educate our kids about it and related topics like consent and boundaries. But we don’t always know the right way to educate our kids as most of us were not taught these things. And so today, I have certified Sexual Health Educator Anuja Amin with me. Motivated by her own experiences she founded Circles of Safety Education Pvt. Ltd. to ensure no child is an unfortunate statistic of sexual abuse. Besides being a sexual health educator, Anuja holds the degree of Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Nottingham and has done her post graduation in Human Resource Management from the London School of Economics. Anuja has sensitised 13,000 students and 9,000 adults on body curiosity and safety. She is determined to raise an informed generation of children, equipped to make safe, responsible and inclusive choices in regards to their well-being. We’ll talk about- -where to begin when it comes to our kids’ safety -preparing ourselves before educating kids -body literacy- when to start, what to tell because ‘good touch-bad touch’ isn’t the best way -what to do if something happens -Creating a safer environment for kids We also discuss some real life situations. I have been working from home since 2014 and have realised that it's both a boon and a bane. As a freelancer, I can decide my own schedule which gives me flexibility but this same ease becomes a problem too. I am sure most freelancers, especially women would agree with me. Even the people around us don’t take work from home as seriously especially if you are not working for a multinational. In homes where both husband and wife work from home, the wife is expected to take up more household responsibilities which is necessarily unpaid work. This episode is not a box of complaints but rather a discussion about work from home and how to make it fairer to women. My guest is Neha J Hiranandani. Neha has spent the last two decades working on development issues, with a focus on gender equity in various organisations including the United Nations. Neha’s columns on social and economic issues have appeared in several prominent publications like Indian Express, Huffington Post, NDTV and Vogue. Her first book, Girl Power! Indian Women Who Broke the Rules , was a national bestseller and her latest book is The Padmas which has garnered a lot of attention and love as it features 50 men and women who have been awarded The Padma awards for their invaluable contribution. Let’s talk about the pros and cons of working from home, self-care, guilt and so much more. I like to think of myself as an open minded parent who doesn’t push her daughter for anything but guess what I realised when I was researching for this episode? I realised that I sometimes force her without being aware of it and sometimes I am too lenient. This conversation helped me find a balance. I am speaking with author Arti Sonthalia. She has a bunch of books, Big Bully and M-me (which was nominated for the Crystal Kite Asia Awards) Hungry To Read, Best Friends Forever (won the FICCI book of the year award 2020) Hungry To Play (shortlisted for the Neev Awards 2020), Read Write Race and Mehar’s World of Colours which is about letting the kids be. Arti herself is an entrepreneur turned author. This episode is an open discussion between two parents about raising kids. I learnt from talking to Arti and you’ll also have some aha moments. Whether you believe in these concepts or not, do listen to this episode to get an understanding of how energies work. I am speaking with Dr. Ankita Singh. Access to mental health care is a privilege. If you can access therapy, support groups, medication, please help yourself and others. Not everyone understands the importance of mental health care, even fewer people think that they need it and way fewer can access it. I wish I could do something about it but till I figure out a way, I’ll keep working on myself and telling people around me about its importance. Working on our mental health is a necessity so on this World Mental Health Day, I am talking about my experiences in working on improving my mental health. I share how I discovered the importance of mental health and the steps I took to improve it. I talk about my experiences of being in therapy and what I learnt. Also sharing my favourite mindfulness/self-care practices and goals for my mental health. It’s a light hearted, chatty episode full of authenticity so join in and let’s work on our mental wellbeing. I am a multi-passionate person- I like writing, my social media work and obviously podcasting. Some people might say that I have a problem with decision making in terms of my career but why do I have to be just one thing? I like doing different things and I have the opportunity so I keep trying. This episode’s guest is also like that- she is a doctor and a painter. Dr. Sushma Mahajan has been working as the Head of Radiology at Bhagwan Mahavir Cancer Hospital in Jaipur. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she found her calling as a watercolour artist. Over the years, Dr. Sushma Mahajan has honed her craft and has held a number of successful exhibitions. Her eclectic artworks adorn the prestigious households of renowned people like Princess Diya Kumari of Jaipur and several suites at the Taj Hotels. Dr. Sushma will share her journey as a doctor and a painter. We talk about the importance of family’ support and how as women we need to hold our own and do things that make us happy. When I think about my daughter’s future, I also worry about whether she’ll have access to necessities like clean water, clean air, fresh foods in the upcoming years. These worries can be categorised as eco anxiety and probably you also have such thoughts. The question is what we can do for a sustainable earth for our kids. Did you know that anxieties related to the environment are more common in women? Or that there are many other ways by which environmental change impacts women’s mental health disproportionately? Do you want to know how? And how we can be a little kinder to earth everyday? All this is discussed in today’s episode with Bhagyashree Jain, the founder of The Disposal Company. She was named in the coveted Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list of 2024 for her pioneering work in introducing Plastic Neutrality in India and creating sustainability solutions. Bhagyashre’s venture is helping brands become plastic neutral. The Disposal Company helps companies offset plastic they have created and used by recovering or removing an equivalent amount from the environment and recycling it. All these insights are available to you for free so I am giving you the responsibility of spreading word about the podcast. Rate, review and share it with your family and friends. Thank you. I see a lot of stereotypes around Love and Arranged marriages and with this episode I am attempting to break them by sharing snippets of my life after ‘happily ever after’. I also talk about why I wanted to get married, my upbringing, conditioning, fights with my husband and about motherhood. Husband-Wife relationship is probably the most important for both the spouses involved and if you find the right person, work-life balance, parenting, homemaking and your personal growth become a little easy. I see changing equations in modern families that benefit both the partners and also arrangements that are no good for anyone. This episode is an attempt to spread the message about healthy relationships in marriages. Let’s Talk. I am a millennial parent raising a gen alpha. We might have adapted to the internet but not all of us fully understand how fast the digital world is changing and what dangers it might carry especially for our kids. Yes, the internet has many many benefits but has its dark side too. I have stopped sharing my daughter’s pictures online and wonder about the right age to give her a phone and about educating her regarding internet’s threats. Even connecting and communicating with this generation requires a very different approach as they are born in a completely digital world and have sharp minds. If you also wonder about your kids' safety in the digital world, if you want to know what to do if your or your kids’ pictures are used wrongly then this episode is for you. We also talk about screen time management, cyberbullying prevention, social media for kids and internet safety for kids because protecting kids online is the need of the hour. I am speaking with cyberpsychologist Nirali Bhatia. Nirali is an accomplished Consulting Psychologist and Psychotherapist, with over two decades of experience in web technology. Her extensive experience and knowledge have led her to be a guest speaker and panelist for organizations such as UN Women and UNICEF. She has also been invited to participate in panel debates on various news channels and cybersecurity conferences. We had a very open talk but please understand that the purpose is not to judge you but to educate you so please listen with an open mind. One thing that definitely comes with marriage is added responsibilities. After marriage both the partners are not only responsible for themselves but also for each other and even for each other’s families to different extents. And if you add parenthood to the equation, things get trickier and overwhelming. While managing responsibilities, we tend to forget ourselves. With so much clutter in our heads, it’s easy to follow what you see around you because you have no mental space to think for yourself. Then comes the fear of judgement, need for validation and we start feeling stuck. We might even feel numb towards our daily lives. We want to take action to do something different but we feel the lack of time and energy. But do you know it’s possible to bring back that feeling of joy in life with Mind Decluttering? It’s possible to get unstuck, get mental clarity and have time to think clearly. And Shikha Pandey is here to guide us. As a Mindfulness Mindset Coach, Shikha enables professionals seeking work life balance to create their unique balanced life by living mindfully. When I was working with my life coach back in 2022, he told me that I have a fixed mindset and I have been working on it ever since. Many people are talking about developing a growth mindset in adults but very few are sharing about how to change our kids’ mindsets. Kids are born with a growth mindset but our upbringing takes them to the fixed side. Let’s understand- what’s growth mindset, why is it essential for everyone, how can we and our kids become growth minded I’m speaking with psycho-socio-spiritual counselor Pooja Oswal. Her work includes parenting and life coaching, breathwork, PLR therapy, and mindset training. Autopilot mode has become our way of living and more so for married women. They look after everyone in the house, do most of the homemaking duties, take care of their job if they work outside the home, parenting if they have kids and then whatever time they get, it gets devoted to TV and smartphones. While focusing on immediate needs, we miss out on thinking beyond the next moment which makes us prone to overwhelm, stress and anxiety. But there’s a better way to live for Growth and in this episode, we discover it. I am speaking with Shwetha Sivaraman who is a corporate banker turned self-mastery coach, passionate about maximising life for herself and others. She founded ‘Being Meraklis’ in her quest to understand what it takes to live a good life and support others in the journey of becoming. You can have it all, just not all at the same time. A lot of us have heard this quote but who decides what does ‘all’ even mean? Not everybody wants the C-suite job or an eight figure business. Not every woman wants to have a partner and many of them don’t want kids. So even though we all have different versions of ‘all’, it’s difficult to let go of societal expectations, social media noise and our own conditioning. This messes up our mental health everyday. But there are ways to define what you want, what is your ‘all’ in the current phase of your life and how to go about it. You’ll discover everything in this episode with my multi-talented guest. Krusha Sahjwani Malkani is an ICF certified career and life coach for women helping them to find and achieve their version of having it all. She's also the Director of a SaaS company, a LinkedIn Top Voice, a published author of fiction and a mother. This episode has glamour, reality and inspiration like a blockbuster movie. My daughter wants to be a model but I am sceptical because in the media, I have mostly seen horror stories about this industry. Things like addiction and casting couch are highlighted more when it comes to modelling so when the team from modelling agency Auraa Talents reached out regarding a podcast interview, I knew I had to do it. I am speaking with Arpita Das who is a former model & founder and CEO of Auraa talents which is a modelling institution and talent management agency. Arpita talks about- -how modelling is like any other profession and busts the biggest myths about it -inclusivity in terms of skin tones and body sizes -her view on casting couch and on how to stay away from predators -on the practical side, we talk about the longevity of a model’s career and the perks of being a model -opportunities and challenges for upcoming models -tips on successfully navigating the modelling landscape And she shares her story of becoming an entrepreneur from a model So join us and share this episode with someone who wants to be a model or with a parent whose children are interested in modelling. I love doing this podcast but rarely talk about it when meeting people. I don’t want to sound salesy but the truth is that if we don’t talk about our work, people won’t get to know about it. Our message won’t reach people who need it and also we won’t be able to earn well. To reduce our fear of selling, I am speaking with business mentor Ishita Khattar in this episode. Ishita is a corporate lawyer turned business mentor and coach. She also has her own podcast Dream Life Collective. She started her coaching business in 2022 as a productivity coach and then transitioned to business coaching. She helps coaches grow their business to their first 6 figures with strategy and intentionality. She is also a hands-on mom to a 5 year old boy. So, she is the perfect person to learn from. Before jumping into the episode please consider sharing it with someone who might find it helpful. Your sharing helps the podcast too so thank you. As much as I love talking about mental health and related topics, I also like a freewheeling discussion and what can be more fun than discussing pop-culture and understanding each other better. That’s why today I have a person with me who has got the pulse of pop-culture. It's none other than Aastha Atray, the editor of Sunday Midday, an author and one of the pioneering podcasters in India. How people think, why they think in a certain way, how to improve our lives in little ways and how we can make our lives simpler and more fulfilling. This is not a sociology class and you might have a different point of view but this episode will give you something to think about and something to work on. So join me and Aastha and don’t forget to share the episode with your friends. Trigger Warning- This episode contains references to domestic violence, suicide, anxiety and depression so please listen at your own discretion. All of us go through many unfavourable situations and feel all kinds of emotions. Some of us have a support system but not everyone is so fortunate. This is where mental health helplines come in. The counsellors listen to you and provide the right guidance. Many women are unsure about reaching out to such helplines so in this episode I am speaking with a person who works with a mental health helpline called Muktaa. Shreya Subbannavar is a Project Coordinator at Muktaa Mental Health Helpline. She is a Psychologist who practices using an eclectic but, mainly a Person Centred approach with some tools of Arts-Based Therapy as well. She was a crisis line responder for Aks Foundation for 5 years and has experience working with denotified tribes - focusing on their education and mental health as well. We talk about how helplines work, how they can help you and how your privacy is protected. We also talk about how we as society can help people around us who might be going through certain challenges. Please share this episode with someone who you feel might benefit from it. I love fashion, always have. My sartorial sense has improved over the years but I do make wrong fashion choices like most of us laypersons. To minimize the mistakes and to bring our style more on point, I have a fashion expert with me. Benaisha Kharas is a master image consultant & integrated personal counsellor. She is passionate about infusing self-love and self-care in her clients, so that they can develop a powerful, influential, and charismatic personality. She imparts skills on the art and science of emotional well-being and image management to women, young adults, professionals from corporates and even fashion brands. She tells us- -what is style -how do we find our personal style -how to balance personal style with trends -should fashion be age appropriate -Western wardrobe essentials -Indian wardrobe essentials -Benaisha’s favourite budget friendly brands I wanted to discuss a lot more but the time limit stopped us. Anyway, this episode is value packed whether you are a total fashionista or in the process of discovering your style. Do remember that none of the things we talk about here are absolute so please listen with an open mind and enhance your fashion game. Please follow Little Fixes on your podcast and share with a friend who might benefit from it.
