In this episode, Carey and Leslie Weirich discuss the impact of loneliness on mental health. They emphasize the importance of social connection and human interaction in combating loneliness. They also discuss the role of technology, particularly smartphones, in contributing to feelings of isolation. They encourage listeners to be intentional about reaching out to others and fostering meaningful connections. The episode concludes with a challenge to connect with at least two or three people every day.
Leslie Weirich has spent the past seven years dedicated to suicide prevention, a mission that began after her son, Austin, took his life on World Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day in 2016. Her advocacy work, which started locally in 2017, quickly gained national attention and led her to speak nationwide on youth mental health, particularly among young men, student-athletes, and the military. In 2021, she partnered with Oaklawn Community Mental Health Center to raise over $100,000 for suicide prevention programs in high schools. Leslie's efforts have earned her standing ovations at The Pentagon and West Point Military Academy. With multiple certifications in mental health first aid and a successful public speaking program, LesliesHope, she continues to raise awareness and save lives. In memory of her son, Leslie's family established the Austin Weirich Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over $24,000. Her first book, "The Gifts of Grief," was released in January, and she speaks at grief centers nationwide. Connect with Leslie at http://www.LesliesHope.org.
