This week on One For The Road i am joined by Andy Stone. After an early ADHD diagnosis in his teens Andy struggled greatly through 2 school expulsions and thus had an early introduction to drugs and alcohol. Through his 20’s and early 30’s unable to hold down a long-term job or to succeed in the classroom the shame

of failure and the guilt of under achieving caused prolonged bouts of victim mindset and poor mental health. Being unable to cope Andy sought help from both private and NHS mental health workers and was prescribed Ritalin, Valium and SSRI’s in conjunction with an ever increasing drinking tolerance and cocaine habit. Until, at the age of 34, Andy’s health reached the point that serious steps needed to be taken! Once through residential rehab and into the fellowships of AA, NA and OA Andy was then able to make a drastic recovery! On his new trajectory not only has Andy been able to educate himself as to the reasons why his neurodiversity caused him to become addicted to drugs and alcohol, but to utilize that same condition to propel him into the record books. Andy has elevated his health and fitness to the level of setting a Guinness World Record in endurance triathlons, swim with 23 species of shark without a cage and he now training to swim the English Channel later this year with plans to go on and become the first person to ‘officially’ swim the Atlantic! With a documentary of his story due out later this year, a budding career in pro speaking and mentoring neurodiverse teens in alternative education Andy is out help others to educate themselves so as no to fall into the same traps he did.
