Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he; He climbed up in a sycamore tree for the Lord he wanted to see… Many of us remember singing this Sunday School song which speaks of a short man named Zacchaeus who was a rich tax collector and wanted badly to catch sight of Jesus. We know Zacchaeus’ name because Jesus spoke it upon seeing him in the tree, stops the parade of people, and invites himself to Zacchaeus’ house. This was a scandalous idea because the practice of the Pharisees was not to cross the threshold of a tax collector and sinner’s home. But Jesus wasn’t scandalized. As we seek Him, Jesus meets us where we are and enters in. He wants to come to our home and visit each room. It just takes one encounter with Jesus to completely reconfigure one’s life and bring a person to greater freedom and transformation of heart. Welcome to the third episode of the Open Doors Lenten podcast series covering various Stories of Conversion. This week, Neal, Lisa, and Jacqueline gather for a poignant dialogue surrounding the story of a woman healed from twelve years of hemorrhaging. The profound poverty of this woman is discussed and why the constraints of the Levitical Law would have caused her such desperation. “And then she heard about Jesus,” says Neal, “And she grabs hold of it!” The woman verbalizes her belief that Jesus can heal her and merges herself into the throng to merely touch his cloak. The idea of preparation is discussed within the story and related to preparing for an Unbound session. What should we focus on if we aren’t sure what the Holy Spirit is showing us? Neal emphasizes how verbalizing something brings about conviction. The words of Jesus have such meaning here – words like the question, “Who touched me?” and the reassurance, “Daughter, your faith has saved you.” The woman – an individual in the crowd – was healed, yes, but more importantly touched by the Father’s love. We’re blessed with a Lozano trio this second week of Lent as Jenn, Matt, and Janet discuss a story found in three of the four gospels. It’s about a boy who suffered from an evil spirit that would cast him to the ground, cause him to foam at the mouth, and even throw him into the fire! This story embodies healing — physical healing of the boy but also the healing exchange between the boy’s father and Jesus. Desperate, the boy’s father cried out to Jesus, “Have compassion on us!” He included himself in the request. And Jesus’ mercy shows in His response which resulted in the father’s words that have resonated through the ages, “I do believe, help my unbelief!” Human interaction was so important to Jesus. In the same way, Unbound Ministry involves compassionate human interaction with people as we speak and seek the power of Jesus. On this Valentine’s Day, what do a Naval Academy graduate and a personal organizer have in common? The same alma mater, 37 years of marriage, four children, and a heart for Unbound ministry! In this episode, you’ll meet Sandy and Denise MacMurtrie and hear their faith-filled Unbound story. “Hi, I’m Denise!” she said. And so began their first conversation in the 1980’s while at Villanova University. “We still joke about that night,” says Sandy as he and Denise share where they were back then, where God is taking them, and where they hope to go on this life journey of faith. Shortly after Unbound was published, Sandy and Denise attended a conference and subsequently served as intercessors. Denise says that over the years, praying the Five Keys in her own devotions was foundational for her faith life. Two decades later with children grown, they thought of Unbound ministry often, saying to one another, “We should do this.” “Then we got this mailing about the Leadership Conference,” says Sandy. Meet the warm and encouraging Maria Kamenstein, a retired educator, church volunteer, and experienced Unbound leader who is currently writing her spiritual memoir. Maria (pronounced /ma-rye-ah/) tells of her Quaker roots in rural Iowa, college days in the 1960’s, falling in love with her husband Dana, and moving to Philadelphia. When marital conflict left Maria downhearted, she went home to Iowa for a visit and found her younger brothers involved with the Jesus Movement. “They were all out for Jesus,” says Maria. She was drawn to their peace, joy, and centeredness. Maria went home and began to read and pray. She asked God about her marriage and felt like the Lord brought to mind her wedding vows and said, “You made a promise. Stick to it.” Maria replied, “Okay God, but you’ll have to make it work because we can’t.” Surrendering to God brought change within that altered the dynamics in her marriage, resulting in less conflict. After years of prayer by many people, one day Maria’s husband Dana - who is Jewish - said to Maria, “I need to know about God.” He began attending church with her. Dana, a psychologist, was interested in Unbound as a source of healing support to people. He began attending Unbound conferences and, in time, Maria joined him. “Then Neal and Janet started teaching people how to do Unbound sessions. We started doing Unbound prayer with people,“ says Maria. Retired for five years now, Maria is an active leader in Unbound prayer both in-person and via Zoom. “It has been such a privilege to do God’s work in this way,” she says. Jack’s candid, honest testimony tells how he met his wife, his church journey, and how his parish priest pressed him to receive Unbound prayer. “We did the Unbound thing,” says Jack. “We were at Worldgate in Herndon sitting on chairs in the middle of a giant hallway.” This proved life-changing for Jack as he prayed through unresolved trauma from his childhood and experienced a profound vision. “There was Jesus!” he states. An attorney, business leader and father, Jack now has added Unbound ministry to his repertoire. He took the Unbound Basic Training Ecourse at his priest’s suggestion and soon thereafter was asked to start an Unbound ministry team at his parish. He speaks of his reticence. “Can I do it? Diogo remembers first experiencing Unbound in 2015 as a seminarian and being prayed for by Neal. He knew it was something he needed personally, and it was the beginning of a journey. First serving under Msgr. Stephen Rosetti at the St. Michael’s Center for Spiritual Renewal when in Washington, D.C., Fr. Diogo shares what first drew him to deliverance ministry and how he finds the Unbound model especially unique and helpful. The book Unbound became available in Portuguese in 2023 soon after Fr. Diogo arrived in Philadelphia to pastor the Brazilian and Portuguese community estimated at upwards of 40,000 people. “Once I came to Philadelphia, the Lord sent me someone who really needed help…We did the Father’s blessing [and] this person completely was transformed,” shares Fr. Diogo. “I began seeing this tremendous grace as a priest using the Unbound model.” Last spring, Fr. Diogo held the first Portuguese Unbound conference in the Philadelphia area. Registration quickly reached capacity with attendees from the whole region, around the country, and more wanting to attend. Fr.
