It appears that voting in the 1700's was limited to white property holders. The U.S Constitution originally left it to the states to determine who is qualified to vote in elections. Some states also employed religious test to ensure that only Christian men could vote. 1800's official barriers to voting started to recede. Durung the early part of the 19th century state legislatures begin to limit the property requirement for voting. However, in decades that followed many states particulary in the South used a range of barriers, such as poll taxes and literacy tests, to deliberately reduce voting among African American men. Then came 1920 Women win to vote. In 1960 Southern states ramped up barriers to voting. In 1971 Young people win to vote. President Richard Nixon then later signed the 26th Amendment bringing down the voting age to 18 from 21. Several other laws have been passed however today more than ever we really need to pay attention to what is going on. Join myself and others as we discuss, Men and Voting. I want to hear your thoughts as well as your concerns. To join in on the conversation call 516 387-1916. Hosted by Jeanette Abney.…
