Sports allows us to look within and gain awareness with inequalities we have regarding race, gender, or religion. We have seen the historic images: Jackie Robinson being the first Black man called up to play in Major League Baseball, Jessie Owens dominating Track & Field at the Berlin Olympic Games, or Billie Jean King dominance in Tennis. However, those actions were not enacted by our government. There was a lack of opportunity given to a large faction in our nation, where fifty-one percent of our population was not allowed to participate in competitive sports activities inter-collegiately. Imagine telling a child they cannot participate, even though they are skilled, love the game, and all because they were a girl no a woman.
