It's Not About Food Podcast with Laurelee Roark

Expressing ourselves is a way to live our truth in our bodies, minds and souls. Many times we’ve been taught that to express our feelings, to put up boundaries, to be honest, and to just allow ourselves to be ourselves it might be upsetting to others. The real truth is, if we let ourselves show our “whole self”, it is beneficial for everyone. "Expressing Yourself” read by Carol Normandi, page 158. “It's Not About Food” by Carol Normandi and Laurelee Roark. Carol Normandi is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice since 1992. She is a co-founder of Beyond Hunger, Inc. and co-author with Laurelee Roark of two books developing Beyond Hunger’s approach: It’s Not About Food: Ending Your Obsession with Food and Weight (Putnam 1998), and Over It: A Teen’s Guide To Getting Beyond Food and Weight (New World Library 2001). Carol works with adults, children, couples and families, specializing in eating disorders and body image disturbances. She has facilitated support groups, led workshops, and lectured about eating disorders for more than twenty years. Carol provides clinical consultation for Beyond Hunger. She is also the Executive of Amrita Eating Disorder Treatment. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

If you know the word divine means holy or sacred, then you have a clue to the meaning of divinity, which can be a god or other religious being. Anything very holy is full of divinity. Divinity is also the subject of religion itself: divinity students are studying theology. But if you're not into religion, don't worry — you can still enjoy divinity, a type of white, creamy fudge made with egg whites that probably goes well with angel food cake. The definition above was something I could totally get behind. I found it by googling divinity on the website, “vocabulary.com.” Loved it. Especially because there are other god-like-angelic things that are divine could also taste good…like… Yummmmmy white creamy fudge and Angel food cake. Yes please. When I was able to recover from my addictions, my disorders and my need to control everything frigging thing in my life, but also let go of the idea that being divine was something outside myself, I was able to truly step into who I really was. What I learned was all parts of me and every thing else in the universe was already divine. We all are body, mind and spirit. We may forget that fact but there it is. No matter who, what or where we are on our journey we are the essence of love, acceptance, peace and joy. Of course we can choose to deny our divinity and go towards a much darker place but we will never really be happy or successful because it’s not our true self. As I’ve been writing about some of the profound things my brother and I talked about as he lay dying was the idea of grace and being pure love as a much easier way to live our lives. One night as I sat with him we talked about how hard our childhood had been. We’d been abused, abandoned, and hurt by the grown ups in our lives. And the pain of it was, for no other reason, than it was probably the way they had been treated by their caretakers. So it was generational, and we eventually we had the power to stop that cycle of suffering ourselves as did they, even though they did not. So the discussion was why? My brother said with tears rolling down his cheeks,” It was so easy to do the right thing. Much much easier than the hard thing which is the wrong thing.” Now I have to say he said this as he was dying of Alzheimer’s, as he had not eaten in days and as he was so very sick. If this is not the definition of being in the divine, of experiencing divinity, of being in the state of grace, I don’t have any idea what would be. My takeaway is we all have a choice. To realize all parts of us are divine because we are pure divinity just by existing. Or, of course, we can step aside our true nature and force ourselves to not be divine. But where’s the fun in that? No where. That’s where. Here is a wonderful article and obituary about my wonderful brother Keith St Clare from Cynthia Laird of the Bay Area Reporter Newspaper. So grateful to the LBGT community for their support and dedication to the truth. It's Not About Food Podcast with Laurelee Roark

Inhabit means to live in our bodies, not in our heads. When we learn to be present in our bodies, to move out of the obsessive thinking and into our feelings, we can learn to identify and meet our physical, emotional and spiritual needs. First, we must be aware that we are in the obsession, in the thinking, in the head. Then we cause our breath to being our awareness into our body and explore what we are experiencing in our bodies. The podcast today is me interviewing me about living in the bodies we have, taking care of the bodies we have and loving the bodies we have. I get asked all the time by those who are recovering from disordered eating and body dysmorphia, "how the hell am I supposed to do that?" I agree it seems impossible because so many of us have been told never to accept the weight we have, or the body we have, or the image we have, if it’s not perfect. So we didn’t and it has caused untold damage. But we can change. We can accept our weight, no matter what it is right now, as a starting point. And then we can work to be satisfied with our natural weight. Which brings up the other question I also get asked all the time. “What is my normal weight? And when will I get there and how will I know that’s it?” The answer is… When we consistently eat when we are hungry, consistently eat what our bodies want to eat and we consistently stop when full…we will go to a weight ourbodies want to be at. When we exercise in a way our bodies want to exercise, get enough sleep, cut down on stress, follow our path and love ourselves body, mind and spirit, no matter what, we will be at our normal size. And of course we have to consider it all at this age, with this DNA, with this life style and with this life…for the rest of our lives. Subject to change cause if we don’t die, we’ll get older. Trust is knowing that our bodies are living intelligences, giving us immediate feedback about what does and doesn’t work for us. When we stop viewing our bodies as something we need to manipulate, we can begin seeing them as very wise teachers. When we start to trust our bodies, we can listen and understand what they need. Jenny Sederholm, LCSW While I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for 14 years, life quieted and expanded for me eleven years ago when I was intensively trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I co facilitated a DBT Yearlong program for three years at Kaiser Permanente while training clinicians in DBT skills and principles. Through DBT, my perceptions were blown to pieces as I practiced intentional awareness, mindfulness and ever present dialectics. I also came to appreciate the functional power of life skills and understanding the purpose of our emotions. My life journey has since brought me to the Willa Wellness team. Here, I am honored to share with and grow alongside those whom are struggling with eating disorders. Through our work together, we strive to uncover the worn out stories that keep us from the freedoms that are our birthright. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

Holistic means looking at ourselves in a way that includes our entire being, taking each part of ourselves into consideration. When we stop measuring ourselves by how we look, how thin we are, or how much weight we’ve lost, we can begin to embrace all the physical, emotional and spiritual parts of ourselves. We move beyond the goals of having a certain body type and into the integrity and magic of the recovery process itself. Sheira Kahn is a Marriage and Family Therapist and fully recovered bulimic. She holds degrees from UC Berkeley and the California Institute of Integral Studies. Ms. Kahn taught in the UC Berkeley Extension certificate program in Eating and Weight Disorders for ten years. In the 1990s, she studied inner critic disengagement with Byron Brown and natural eating with Judy Wardell. These discourses became the pillars of her method on ending disordered eating. Later, she trained in couples counseling, where the research on attachment provided the final pieces to the puzzle of understanding disordered eating and how to heal it. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

Creativity is the outward manifestation of who we are as spiritual beings. It is the magical ability to crest something out of nothing that is uniquely ours. It is the gift of being able to imagine, to dream, and then to make the dreams come true. Creative expression is essential to feeding our souls. It forces us to go beneath the obsession with food and weight. To access the part of ourselves that passionately hungers for self expression. Maneva is an intern working on her certification in eating disorder coaching at the Carolyn Costin Institute. Drawing on her own lived experience and full recovery from an eating disorder she volunteered for two years as a peer mentor and a peer support group leader to help others in their recovery. She combines practical skills, keen empathy, and an uplifting sense of humor to create lasting and positive change in people’s lives. As an adjunct provider in eating disorder treatment, she will offer food behavior coaching, meal support, and more through her private practice. Maneva holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Finance from Sonoma State University and has a professional background in banking and financial technology. Feelings So when the peer educators go in the classrooms to present our 3 prong prevention and recovery program from disordered eating (body acceptance, intuitive eating and emotional intelligence) the students are interested and engaged. But as we move into talking about feelings, everyone goes into a coma. No one wants to hear about their own or anyone else’s feelings. They’re often too yucky, too messy, too uncomfortable and hard. But we have to. It’s what makes us human. Cause, if it’s not about food, and it’s not about weight…what is it about? Everything else. Especially feelings. Feelings are the emotions that come from the core of our being. They are an essential part of knowing our needs and then getting those needs met. Our feelings tell us when we are hurt and when we need to set a boundary. They let us know what makes us happy, and what feeds our soul. When we can learn how to go beneath the body hatred and diet thoughts we will experience our feelings fully. This lets us take back our own lives and experiences in order to be present in the moments we have on the earth. It is a privilege and a miracle to be here and feel what we feel, love who we love, be who we are. Expressing Feelings CD Visualization on page 113 of Its Not About Food….blah, blah, blah. After doing the visualization above try this to put into action what you learned: 1. Practice letting yourself feel whatever you feel. No matter what. 2. Bring your awareness to the feeling and be present for it. No matter what. 3. Try not to change the feeling. No matter what. 4. Observe and accept the feeling. No matter what. 5. Stay connected with yourself and your feeling. No matter what. The feeling will move, dissipate, change and fade. No matter what. Like magic! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

Today’s podcast presents the Beyond Hunger Peer Educators talking about who they are and what they do in our program. These 3 young women are leaving to go away to school. Below is why they have donated so much of their time and themselves to the program. Grace 4 years peer educator. Going to Chicago being part of the peer education program has taught me not only practical skills such as public speaking, leadership, and teamwork but also to approach every situation with compassion. knowing I’ve made a difference in my community and potentially helped those who are silently suffering leaves me eternally grateful for the program and the people I’ve met within it. Anna 2 years peer educator. Going to Boston “Volunteering with Beyond Hunger has allowed me to take an experience that was difficult and ugly and turn it into something beautiful: helping others love themselves and their bodies. I know that in every classroom we present to, there is at least one student who is resonating with our lesson and, if not convinced to seek professional help, is at least learning new strategies in approaching their relationship with food and realizing they are not alone in their struggle”. Vee Ly 3 years peer educator. Going to UC Berkeley “Being in Beyond Hunger for the past three years has truly shaped my character and approach helping my peers. I have learned so much through the peer education program such as public speaking, how to deal with hardship, and how to help people in their own specific way. This program has not only helped me through my own journey with mental health and disordered eating, but allows me to help others in situations similar to my own, which creates an important safe space in schools.” ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

We can trust that our process is exactly right for us and we don’t have to waste precious time comparing ourselves to others. Marcella Raimondo For a decade in my teens and early twenties I battled with anorexia nervosa. As a queer, cisgender, able-bodied woman of color, I struggled in my recovery because my story did not mirror those in mainstream eating disorder textbooks and biographies. After reading the testimonials of women of color and queer women in A Hunger So Wide and So Deep , by Becky Thompson, I found voices that resonated with my own life experiences. I began to realize that a huge gap exists in the treatment services for underrepresented and underserved folks with eating disorders. My life’s calling and social justice spirit came out of this experience. Website: https://marcellaedtraining.com/ Email: Marcella@marcellaedtraining.com ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

Fat thoughts are the kind of thoughts we have when we are criticizing our bodies, calling them too fat, too ugly, too big, or too “whatever”. These thoughts are learned from our culture’s fat prejudice and body hatred. Sometimes when we are young and experience shame or uncomfortable feelings, we change them into body hatred. When we begin to understand that our fat thoughts and body hatred are learned, then we can take the blame off our body, and process the deeper feelings in far more constructive ways. Carol Normandi, LMFT, is a licensed psychotherapist and a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher, with over 30 years of experience as an individual therapist, speaker, author, and group/workshop facilitator. Faith is trusting that there is a loving source of which you are a part. Having faith means that you can let go of fear and tight control and trust that there is great wisdom within you and around you, allowing yourself to breathe and listen for spiritual guidance. Having faith means that even though the recovery process may become difficult and dark, you can trust that you will also find the grace and the light. Creativity is the outward manifestation of who we are as spiritual beings. It is the magical ability to create something out of nothing that is uniquely ours. It is the gift of being able to imagine, to dream, and then to make the dreams come true. Creative expression is essential to feeding our souls. It forced us to go beneath the obsession with food and weight and access the part of ourselves that passionately hungers for self expression. In this podcast, I interview three of my fabulous peer educators. Each one will talk about the 3 prongs of recovery from eating disorders and body hatred. These awesome young women get trained to go into classrooms with me all over the Bay Area and present a message of hope, knowledge, prevention, and recovery for students. Whether the students have eating or weight issues themselves I have found we can all learn how to take care of the glorious bodies we are born with, we can all re-learn intuiting eating and we can all listen and attend to our emotional selves even when we don’t want to. Complete recovery from an eating disorder is completely 100% possible. I believe recovery is about letting go of the diet mentality and integrating intuitive eating and trusting our bodies…one day at a time. It took me a very long time to dial all of this in, but I was able to. And I had to use a lot of love, acceptance, compassion, and respect. It's about letting go of fat thoughts and recognizing that diet and fat thoughts are messages we send to ourselves when we need to listen to our feelings more deeply. When we are able to listen to our truth in the very moment we are feeling body hatred we will be able to stay in recovery and recognize the red flags that signal a need for more self-care. It's about listening and caring and being kind to us. 3 prong recovery and prevention model of Beyond Hunger Presentations of the Peer Educators. The 3 prong model we teach is body acceptance, intuitive eating and emotional wisdom. In this show I interview 3 of our recent peer educators about how they go into schools and talk about how to recover from disordered eating and body dissatisfaction as well as preventing disordered eating and body dissatisfaction. Using a interactive power point students learn what the problem is, where it came from and what to do. Body Acceptance:In this culture, individuals learn to value an unrealistic and unattainable “perfect body” and equate thinness with being “good, attractive, and worthy”. Feelings of low self-worth and self-doubt become misplaced upon bodies, creating a very negative and sometimes abusive relationship with their bodies. People can recreate their relationship with their bodies by healing the body shame and developing acceptance for their natural bodies. Intuitive Eating: People struggling with food and weight issues are usually out of touch with the physiological cues that signal hunger and satisfaction. The restrictive nature of most diets leads to feelings of deprivation and can actually worsen compulsive behavior, leading to the diet/binge cycle. By re-learning to eat intuitively, people can base their food choices on internal bodily signals of hunger, satisfaction, and fullness. Emotion Wisdom: (The symptoms or behaviors of eating disorders (overeating, under-eating, and the obsession with food and weight) are often developed by people as ways of coping with psychological stress. In order to create alternative ways to meet their emotional and spiritual needs, it is first necessary to develop emotional wisdom: the ability to identify, express and process emotions. Spiral with Maria Raquel Pandeyhe mrgramajo@gmail.com Recovery process is not linear, but rather like a spiral. As we begin our journey of recovery around the spiral, we will meet many layers of life experiences that trigger disordered eating and body hatred behaviors. Even though we are once again doing these behaviors, we are not at the same starting point in the spiral. As we take each experience and use it as a building block in our healing, we move ourselves along the spiral. When we are consciously working on our recovery, every experience teaches us, giving us more strength and wisdom. Eventually, we develop more effective coping tools to deal with these life experiences and the disordered eating and body hatred behaviors are no longer necessary. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

Fullness is the bodily experience of having just enough to eat…not too much and not too little. When we slow down, stay conscious and go within, we can hear and feel this natural bodily sensation. Every person experiences fullness differently, and some of us have learned to ignore this signal. To experience fullness you may need to practice listening to your body. Lisa grew up in South Sacramento and moved to the Bay Area to go to college, first attending UC Santa Cruz, and then San Francisco State University. While working as a social worker in affordable housing in Sacramento and SF for 13 years, she gained experience in community organizing, program management, and advocacy for low-income residents of Mercy Housing California. Lisa has always been passionate about empowering people, women and girls in particular, which led her to Beyond Hunger, where she took the position as board president and volunteered to be an advocate for teens and adults struggling with weight issues. She decided to leave social work and become an educator. She attended SFSU and earned a Master’s in Special Education. Worked at Oakland Military Institute for 4 years, then moved back to the Sacramento area where she worked with TK- high school students receiving special education services. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★…

Compassion is the necessary foundation for all healing. When we can have compassion for all the parts of ourselves that we dislike the most, we can let go of the debilitating shame and self-hatred we have carried for so long, and use out compassion to bring love, understanding, and then if necessary, change. Desiree McGunagle has been in recovery from my eating disorder since October 2018 (bulimia nervosa). She works in communications supporting survivors of sexual assault at our local rape crisis center. Desiree loves talking to others about recovery and learning from all the unique experiences people have in getting closer to their most authentic selves. In her spare time (whatever that is) she loves reading (currently anything Sarah J. Mass), being cat-obsessed, and taking care of her two horses.
