How Committed Are You?

Last week we celebrated our independence from the tyranny and oppression of a foreign government. The men who brought about forming a new nation, self-governed had to be committed to make it happen.

Some things you may not know about the 56 men that signed the Declaration of Independence:

  • Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
  • They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
  • What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. Nevertheless, they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

These men were obliviously committed to what they believed was right and good for our country. How committed are you to reaching your personal goals?

Money, money, money….

You can’t do what you do to chase the money. It won’t work – especially in the tough times. You have to be doing it for the sheer pleasure of living your dream/passion. Cliff was so committed to living his dream, he worked so hard, he was consumed with worry and anxiety over the lack of money for the everyday financial security for his family that he become physically ill and was hospitalized. The dream had become a job – no longer a passionate desire.

It is often easy to say what you don’t want, but not easy to define what you do want. It can’t be for the money – nothing that comes easy can fulfill you, it’s what you work hard for, are passionate about, that gives you the feeling of success and reward. The money is a reward for the hard work to achieve success, but you won’t be successful until you are fully committed to obtain your goals.

Breaking the Rules….

Independence and freedom were the actual goals of our Founding Fathers, but to obtain those goals, they had to be committed to their cause and break a few rules of a much broken system. Without commitment, there is no freedom for success.

One of the themes in the movie, “Brave”, is how someone broke rules to discover their identity. Sometimes it takes stretching the rules or taking a risk to reach our full potential, to obtain our goals, to live our dreams.

A chapter in Tracy’s book, “Restored”, is about freedom – freedom to do anything you want and free to become anyone you want to be, but you must go after it. Be committed.

  • Without commitment, success won’t happen.
  • It can’t be about the money.
  • Don’t be afraid to fix a broken system.
