Join your host Andrew Tisser with his guest Josh McGough, as they talk about the perspective of a med student under a three-year accelerated program. In the 1st episode of Learner Sessions, Josh shares his process of matching with specialties, what med students struggle with today, why medicine is interdisciplinary, and more. As a medical student under Stony Brook University’s accelerated MD program, Josh also discusses on the episode if it’s a program he’d recommend or not.

In this episode you will learn:

· Josh McGough – on ruling out specialties

· The challenges of a modern-day med student

· A standard type of fear for incoming doctors

· Medicine is highly interdisciplinary

· Is a three-year accelerated program recommendable?

About Josh McGough:

Josh McGough is a third-year medical student at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He completed a BS in Biochemistry and BA in Chemistry at the University of Rochester - his hometown. He then went on to complete an MS in biomedical science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

He is currently part of Stony Brook’s 3-year MD program, which lets him shave off a year of training so long as he stays there for residency training. He is thrilled to be the first student accepted into this program which is going into Emergency Medicine! In his spare time, Josh posts medical mnemonics and memory devices on Twitter to help his fellow students get a couple extra points on test day.

Outside of academia, Josh loves musical theatre, reliving his glory days of college a cappella with the Midnight Ramblers, and anything that includes getting fresh air. More importantly, Josh is a husband and father. He’s just trying his best!
