On today's episode of Yours Mentally we talk about the psychology of people that engage in substance abuse. This episode is in conversation with Shaira Kohli who is a counselling psychologist.
We start the episode by talking about what are various substances that can be abused and what effects do they have on us.
We then go on to talk about what are the causes of addiction and why does an individual do something, knowing that it’s harmful to them?
We then speak about if people are genetically predisposed to getting addicted or does it all depend on their lifestyle and experiences.
Shaira then goes on to explain what is the brain like on drugs and in what ways do we feel and behave differently after/while consuming the drugs.
We then talk about the connection between childhood trauma and lifelong addiction.
We also talk about whether addiction is a choice or a disease.
Shaira then walks us through what treatment and therapy in a rehabilitation centre look like.
Lastly, Shaira gives a few ways in how we can help a loved one we know who is already/on the way to getting addicted.
