In this interview, I have a thought-provoking conversation with Rick Olderman, orthopedic physical therapist specializing in chronic pain and nagging injuries that "seem to be incapable" of healing.
A huge motivating factor behind Rick’s search for answers was his own chronic back pain, and after years in clinic but unable to fully help patients, he realized that the fundamental and crucial element connecting movement, structure, and pain was missing from the general conventional physical therapy practice. With additional training and knowledge in Pilates, personal training, and yoga--yet still coming up short--Rick went on to dedicate the last two decades towards pioneering this systems-based research.
His affordable at-home programs provide a much deeper understanding of how unhelpful lifestyle habits and movement patterns can break down muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone, which in turn creates pain. He's written several books, including his newest, "Solving the Pain Puzzle," and Rick holds a very stern belief that given the right tools, we absolutely have the ability to heal chronic pain.
Rick and I talk about everything from the faulty belief systems we have about our bodies, we discuss why this systems-based approach is not addressed in PT school, he educates us on the patterns of dysfunction, goes through some interactive exercises with us, and so much more. This episode is truly supercharged with detailed information, and provides much hope to those who've felt stuck because of their pain.
